  • breastfeeding question

I called the lactation consultant, and left a message to have the LC call me back. Anyway I haven't heard back, and thought I would see if anyone here had an answer.

I am breastfeeding Reed. Anyway, he has a bacterial infection of his belly button. He has been put on a topical antibiotic cream and an oral antibiotic (Keflex). I was wondering if this will increase his risk of getting thrush. I want to avoid getting thrush at all cost, and was wondering also if there is anything I can do to prevent it.

So far here is what I am doing---

handwashing before and after diaper changes, admistering of the meds, and feedings.

giving the oral med after feeding

    Thanks.

Its not uncommon for babies to get yeast infections after exposure to antibiotics. Henry had diaper rash from antibiotics, but never thrush. We used athletes foot creme on his tushie for that.

Other than what you are doing, you might want to eat yogurt. It contains acidolphous or however its spelled cultures and that helps with yeast infections. Letting your nipples air dry and changing nursing pads frequently to keep the area dry is recommended too.

Here's some info on thrush from La Leche League

Sounds like you're doing all the right things! Once they get old enough for applesauce, you can squirt some acidophilus caplets into it (the good bacteria from yogurt). Hope he feels better soon!

        thrush

My oldest got thrush when she was about a month old. OUCH! It tears up your nipples...like daggers...makes open sores. Anyhow, the LC had me wipe the inside of her mouth before feeding. After feeding I had to put monistat on my nipples. Just make sure to remove the monistat before nursing. Hopefully, he won't get thrush...but if he does hope this helps.
