  • Mom's Night Out

OK, so I belong to three different groups that sponsor various moms or parents nights out. I went to one on Thursday night that was really interesting because it was the DC members of the DC Chapter of FRUA (Families for Russian and Ukranian Adoption).

I have no problem hanging out with parents who have given birth to their kids, but it was so refreshing to meet and talk with people who have experienced the same stuff that we have. Language acquisition, transitions, attachment issues, intestinal parasites, PTSD, and birth parent prenatal behavior- all issues for many adoptive families but ALL issues for people adopting from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. We had parents representing Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

We compared horror stories and weather stories as well. (I was the 'winner' for having gone to Siberia in December!)

All in all a refreshing evening out. and if you parents don't belong to a group, I went through yahoo and found DCMetroMommies through the groups section. FRUA I found through a google search when we started the adoption process and we joined the local chapter. It's nice to have groups that have common interests (much like here!)

    Just some food for thought-

I'll start searching for my "white girl married to a hindu" support group today!

Just teasing. I can see why finding a group with circumstances similar to yours would be refreshing. So many people make assumptions regarding the origin of children - it's nice to have the common ground (as we do here) to quickly jump over several of those preconceptions.

I hope they have a San Antonio chapter!

Good for you, that does sound like a nice group to have for support. I agree you should win for Siberia in December!!

When you find the white girl/Hindu support group let me know, I need the southern Catholic girl married to a New York Jewish guy group!

Gosh Jenn, I thought we already had a group of "white girls married to brown men" club???
I'm glad you got to connect with parents in similar circumstances Jlorene, I'm sure it was refreshing to meet people that have gone through similar situations. We've got a little girl in our neighborhood that came over from Russia when she was 6--she picked up English and now is in a Spanish immersion school (the same one my daughter goes to). It's absolutely amazing that in 6 short months her little brain has absorbed so much. I don't know the mom very well yet, but she has eluded to that there have been all sorts of challenges, all very worth it of course.

I don't know HOW I missed this! You're right - but your MIL is WAY TOO EASY on you. You don't know our REAL pain!

You're totally right, Jenn! I just found out last night that my mil might be coming to visit this weekend and I'm downright giddy!
