OK, so I belong to three different groups that sponsor various moms or parents nights out. I went to one on Thursday night that was really interesting because it was the DC members of the DC Chapter of FRUA (Families for Russian and Ukranian Adoption).
I have no problem hanging out with parents who have given birth to their kids, but it was so refreshing to meet and talk with people who have experienced the same stuff that we have. Language acquisition, transitions, attachment issues, intestinal parasites, PTSD, and birth parent prenatal behavior- all issues for many adoptive families but ALL issues for people adopting from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. We had parents representing Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
We compared horror stories and weather stories as well. (I was the 'winner' for having gone to Siberia in December!)
All in all a refreshing evening out. and if you parents don't belong to a group, I went through yahoo and found DCMetroMommies through the groups section. FRUA I found through a google search when we started the adoption process and we joined the local chapter. It's nice to have groups that have common interests (much like here!)
Just some food for thought-
