Funny- when we met Nikolai he was nine months old and the ladies were attempting to give him his drinks from a cup, he was eating soup with bits of meat and veggies plus meat patties, and mashed up root vegetables.

We subsisted on rice cereal and yogurt the entire time we lived in the hotel. He preferred plain yogurt, too.

The babies that I had in my exercise class loved guacamole, refried beans, hummus, the ever popular bananas, Gerber puffs. My nephew hated the jarred baby foods until my mother taught my brother to add butter and a teeny bit of salt to them to give them some flavor. (unsalted butter- if you have salted butter just use that). American kids get such bland foods, it's no wonder they don't like them!

Yogurt! Jenn, that reminds my of how much Bryn loved yogurt. I fed it to her before 12 months, not sure if that broke some magic dairy rule, but she is fine (no milk to that point).

Jane -- the porridge isn't too bad to make. I usually did it once a week, on Sunday, and it would last til Friday. I think the box stuff is just fine too but the porridge is a little more interesting. She drank formula sometimes and loved it even though the smell about knocked me over!

DS loves yogurt, too! I think we started that around 8 or 9 months. I had read that it is ok to give yogurt before 12 months because it is processed differently than milk...same thing with cheese...but who knows, the AAP changes their recommendations just about every other day.

bony00, you should be able to start introducing a sippy cup as well if you haven't already.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I introduced the sippy cup but at the moment she just bangs it on her tray, chews on the spout and throws it on the floor. I tried the Magic Avent cup, the Playtex and the Nuby. She would actually drink from the Nuby. The problem with the Nuby is that it doesn't have the handles.

I have the Munchkin fresh food feeder and I have given her strawberries, mango and blue berries in there. I didn't know about the mango being associated with allergies. She likes mangoes.

I am going to try the hummus. I love hummus myself. I also think that I will get one of those baby food books. "The Well Fed Baby" or the Superbabyfood?

I am familiar with the Super Baby Food book by Ruth Yaron. Just a word of warning, it is long and could be easily overwhelming. One of those books that is great when you pick and choose information.

I'm also using the Super Baby Food book and I like it. I agree, it can be overwhelming to try to read, but it's laid out and organized well enough that you can find answers to questions pretty easily. I like that she explains when it's appropriate to introduce certain foods, as well as how to prepare (if you're making the food yourself). She also has what seem to be some good kid-friendly recipes in there, but we're not to that point yet.

I got the Super Baby Food book. I tried making the porridge last night. Baby girl didn't like it. I mixed it with strawberries. Next time I am going to try it again with apple sauce which she loves.
