Well, I'd say I've been duped on the great school district thing....There was a big write-up about our district in our local paper...but I checked a MN school ranking and the only good thing is that the middle school ranks 51st in the state...other than that, I don't see us as being ahead of everyone. By the way the write-up sounded, we were in the top 10 districts or something.

This issue makes me just want to grab the kids and run away from home...but where to? The problem is everywhere.

I've started being a total beyatch at school, and I so feel your pain. Ryan has a gifted program that they pull him into one day a week. The rest of the week is spent doing the same old crap, day in and day out. He isn't challenged. I hate No Child Left Behind.

It would take me all day to write the epic of issues that I am trying to deal with at Ryan's school. They don't challenge him, he leaves for school at 7:00 a.m. and doesn't get home until 3:30. Pile on top of that the 1+ hour of homework, and there is no time to be a kid. It infuriates me. My meeting with his teacher is on Tuesday.

I'm seeing red and I'm anry and bitter about it too. I feel that I have little options as well.

As a teacher the newest buzzword is differentiated instruction... this pretty much means I am REQUIRED to adapt to your childs needs be it ahead of everyone elses or behind the average student in the class. If I am not doing this for you child than I am not doing my job. I am still working on getting better at this skill.... I don't know if anyone ever masters it.

Sometimes open communication with the teacher helps. Especially if it is a new teacher who is overwhelmed with lesson planning, requesting a phone call, conference or even coversing via email may help the teacher to understand what your child is going through. If they do not cooperate then take it to the next level and ask the principal what the schools policy is on differentiated instruction, or gifted programs. Sometimes there are joint programs with other schools throughout the county where students spend part of a day with other gifted kids learning above and beyond the general curriculum guidlines. Investigate... sometimes they are available IF the district requests them.
