  • mother in law and babyfood

Just thought I'd share one of those classic mother in law stories... So my mother in law is actually a real sweetheart and she and I are very close (amazing, I know) but occasionally we hit some awkward moments thanks to cultural differences (she's Indian, I'm not).

She's very excited about the fact that I've recently started feeding the baby solid food. And by started I mean we've introduced rice/oat cereal and apple sauce last week, next week we'll try another fruit or something, etc. Taking it slow.

So today when she came to babysit she excitedly announced to me that next week when she comes to babysit she's going to make a lentil, onion, and chicken mash for the baby to eat cause she's sure she'll like that.

When she said it I think I actually did a double take and was like - "Wait, what?? No no no no... no protein, she's not ready for that yet. I think next week we'll try pears or something, okay?"

She's so sweet and well intentioned and so excited to feed the baby, I actually felt bad telling her no. But seriously, it makes me a little nervous that she would be that clueless about something.

Oh honey. I feel your pain. Honestly, I'd probably have jumped at the chicken/onion/lentil mash only b/c I'm on my 3rd kid, and I do think there's something to be said with not only doing the bland baby food. It really does help to broaden the palette, so once the baby has had proteins, I'd say go for it. I've been much more adventurous with Mattie's diet, and she's much easier to feed than the other two were. With my IL's (also Indian, as you know), I have to be so specific. No - baby aspirin isn't okay. No, you don't just smash up an ibuprofen and mix it in their food ... a lentil/onion/chicken mash would be heaven on this end.

I am with Jenn that once baby has had several foods and shown no signs of allergies, start feeding table food. The indian food will be fine as long as there isn't a lot of heat to it. Spices are fine, just not heat.

Don't get me wrong - I agree with you both COMPLETLY and have every intention of giving Zoe a wide range of flavors. But she's 5 1/2 months old and we started rice cereal last WEEK. That's why I was shocked.
