  • Baby clothes (socks especially)...

Are the Trumpette socks really worth it? I can't believe how expensive they are!!

Being Team Green, we've barely received any clothes as gifts (which is apparently the opposite of what happens when you know the gender) so I'm trying to stock up on at least the basics somewhat affordably. We've got a couple of onesies (about 10 each in newborn and 0-3 months sizes), 3-4 sleepers, and like 4 pairs of socks. I'm expecting the in-laws/my mom to buy a bunch of clothes once they know the gender but I'm not thinking I'm going to get a lot of socks and I haven't had any luck at consignment sales.

    SO...
    1) Is that enough clothes to get me through the first few days?
    2) How many pairs of socks do I need? What brand do I buy? I find it absurd that 6 pairs of socks for a newborn costs $25 but maybe I'm just delusional...

I think I bought cheap fuzzy socks, but in reality he didn't wear them until older. He was pretty much wrapped in a blanket or a sleeper that had feet covers all the time. I'd say skip the socks for now.

crap I just typed a huge response, and it disappeared. Apparently I have a lot to say about baby socks.

Anyway, I'm a sucker for Trumpette socks, but only because of the cute box and cute patterns. They are totally not worth $25, but they make a great gift. I saw some at TJ Maxx the other day for $6! Lets see, the only socks that we ever found that would not just fall off our babies feet were the white haynes ones. They look like man socks, but tiny. We found them at Kroger. And the little fuzzy ones that are equally stretchy all the way down the sock. They don't fall of as much as the others.

I think that is plenty of clothes. A pretty much lives in onsies still. And a pair of pants if we got in public.

The first few days (if not weeks) he/she will wear a lot of sleepers so don't worry about socks right now. Sleepers are great for winter babies because you put them on with a onesie and until you have a diaper blow out you're all set!

Wait, you're supposed to LAYER onesies with sleepers? OMG, I'm going to fail at this. (I'm joking but seriously, who knew?)

You're not, you'll be fine and yes especially in the winter I would put a onesie under just about everything. They can't regulate their body temperature like we can for a while.

I don't bother with trumpett or any special brand. They sell 6-packs of socks in white/blue, white/pink or white/yellow (sometimes just white) that fold over and have sort of a thick knit around the ankle. I don't kknow how to describe them. Those are the only ones that don't fall off. One pack will be enough.

I think the Trumpettes are WELL worth the money, they are the only ones that stayed on. You won't need them for the first few weeks. We did sleepers too, in fact, went to Ross/TJ Maxx and bought more. You'll be great!

I used to put socks on K1 when he wore the sleepers. He was tiny/short and used to pull his feet out of the legs, then get both legs caught up in one side. The socks bulked up his feet a little so he couldn't pull them out.

Keep them in sleepers as long as you can. I also recommend the ones that zip, as they are easier to close when you're fumbling with diaper changes in the dark.

ITA - Footed sleepers w/the zippers are the best when you are learning everything else.

See, everyone's different. I liked snaps on my one-piece outfits and sleepers because my babies hated having their chests exposed during a diaper change, and because I liked being able to sneak a finger into the outfit to check the diaper (I was an obsessive diaper changer).

And I hated onesies and much preferred side-snapping tops. >.< I never snapped the crotch (largely because of the pressure at the leg openings causing diaper wicking) and I was not a fan of lap openings at the neck.

Looking at photos of DS from his first year, I never even put pants on that boy (I loved the bright colors of his cute diapers and we lived in a warm climate) so who am I to speak? LOL.

Ditto! I do think that Trumpette socks are worth the money. Nothing else stays on my son's feet, especially now that he's a crazy crawler. Plus, they're just so dang cute

I liked the zip up footed sleepers for a LONG time. . Phe and Kai are still in them at night. My sis preferred snapped ones bc she only likes unsnapping the crotch for diaper changes. I think the snaps are a pain in the ass. I do so much babywearing in the beginning that the sleepers are so easy bc no clothing rides up or gets caught in the wrap.

I don't use socks much for the first 3-4 months.

You would've figured out layering once the baby was here. It's pretty easy to guess how cold or warm they are and adjust accordingly.

Their clothes are so tiny that even though I felt like I needed to do a load a day, I never felt like I had enough to fill the washer every day. So don't worry about having "enough" to make it several days. Just wash everything (burp cloths, clothes, blankets, etc) together and just pull what you need from the clean clothes basket.

I love Trumpette socks - they're so stinkin' cute, and they do stay on well. But... For my kids, the "best" socks are what I call "booty socks". I'm not sure what they're officially called. These stay on better than any others I've tried. I found them at BRU, in the store brand, so they were pretty cheap. I think they're available everywhere; my mom said she used them on my sister and me!
