  • Ugh, can't decide if we should travel for vacation

In the 3+ years DH has been a resident we have never taken a "real" family vacation. I usually can't take off on the weeks he has vacation, so he stays home, catches up on sleep or errands, and I just work. We are in need of some recharging-- it has been a tough year. Next year our vacation time will be focused on our move for fellowship (fingers crossed that we match)-- finding places to live, finding schools for the kids, finding a job for me, etc. So this is our last chance for a while to take a "real" vacation. We have a week vacation in May (preordained by the hospital, and this is his last vacation until 2013).

We want a simple beach vacation. I have family that own a place in Cozumel, so I thought this would work great. We have a 2.5yo DD and a 1 y.o. DS. By staying at our family's place, we have guaranteed laundry facilities, a kitchen at our disposal, someone who knows the lay of the land, and free lodging. With young kids, we know we'll be spending a lot of down time at the house during naps (if they nap), but they live right by the marina so it's a nice place to hang out.

But it's still an international destination and I'm just having second thoughts about everything. My worries:

    • There are no direct flights from our closest airport. We will have to do a layover. And we've never flown that far with the kids. DD has been on 1 plane which was a 2 hour flight. Granted, she is older now, but one never knows.
    • Since it's an international flight, I have to buy a ticket for our youngest even though he's 1. That adds about $400 minimum to the trip. Not cheap. The whole point is to have a cheaper vacation at the beach.
    • We've stayed overnight before but only at familiar places like our in-laws house. DD does OK sleeping in a regular bed, but DS is harder to predict. What if we do terribly sleeping there? It's not like we can hop on the next flight back.
    • We have to think about water quality, health care coverage in another country, cell phone coverage, etc.
    • (In case you were wondering, we already went through the hell of getting them passports. So that's taken care of, but that too was no fun and wasn't cheap.)

Is this trip a terrible idea? I feel like with all this stress, we should just fly to Florida and call it a day. The $400 we'd save from keeping DS on our laps would pay for a cheap hotel, and at least we're still in the U.S.

Any advice or suggestions?? Apologies in advance- I know this is a stupid thing to complain about.

Personally, I'd just hit Florida. You couldn't pay me enough to venture into Mexico right now and I heart St. Pete soemthing fierce.

I was also thinking "just head to the gulf coast" while I was reading. If you compare more expensive flights to Mexico to a cheaper resort in Florida you'd probably about break even, minus the hassle of a layover. Since it's your only vacation for a long time, I'd definitely feel the temptation of wanting to do something bigger than "just" Florida, but if you guys plan on spending most of your time just hanging out relaxing on the beach or in the resort you probably will have similar experiences both places. Just depends on what all you were hoping to do in the town you're in.

Here's the State Dept's traveler info for Mexico:
        http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/c...w/tw_5665.html

Note that Quintana Roo (where Cozumel is located) has no warnings or advisories in effect. I think the State Dept if anything tends to overplay safety risks, so this is a good sign.

The bigger decision, I think, is about the convenience and cost of travel.

Living in a boarder town we know folks with relatives all over Mexico and the ones that live there all think people are nuts to travel to Mexico. So travel warnings or not I would stay away for now and head to Florida.

Don't forget that if you don't have passports, you will ALL require them (including infants, I believe) to head to Mexico. That will add a hefty sum to your trip. Florida is nice!!

Don't forget to check Allegiant Airlines for cheap tickets!

Mx is not a good place right now, even if you were in an all-inclusive.

The Gulf is quite nice, and if you consider multiple locations (not just in FL), it can be very reasonable.

We are even discussing doing a vacation there soon.

thanks ladies! Just hearing this puts me at ease. If I was stressing about the vacation that much, it was doomed from the beginning.

Florida it is! Any other Florida area suggestions?!

We just return from an international beach vacation, and I'd go to FL next time. AL and GA supposedly have beautiful, sandy gulf beaches too. I hear good things about the FL gulf. Small waves, good for families.

In my experience, the 1 yo will travel great! Mine was flexible with where she napped/slept at that age.

I would say San Diego, but you're on the other coast, so Florida would be great!

um, it's not in Florida, but we took our first family vacation with our kiddo to Folly Beach in SC. It was lots of fun, and they have tons of condos and townhouses for really reasonable prices. With laundry, kitchen, etc... if you want it. Its a tiny town so you can walk to the beach from anywhere, downtown also, which is adorable, and it's a pretty short drive to Charleston too!
                        Love Folly Beach!

Another fun vacation spot is Provincetown. It's right at the tip of Cape Cod and there is a TON to do.

We went on vacation to FL for cheep and ease with a 2 yr old. It was perfect! I know the gulf coast has it's ucky reputation but we gave it a shot and I'm so glad we did! Flying into Tampa was no prob. We stayed right on the beach at a hotel in St. Pete Beach. You can stay in St. Pete Beach all week or drive up and down the little coast up to Clearwater Beach for places to eat. There is also a nice Walgreens and Publix right across the street from all the beach side hotels and resorts. Perfect for a vacation with little kids!! I wanna go back, like now. haha!

Yeah I'd say the gulf coast is calmer than the ocean side. Marco Island is nice too. Destin is always popular. I like South Florida but it's definitely more expensive. Pretty much anywhere along the coast will be fine. If you need more city stuff, stick close to a bigger city. If you just want sun and sand and surf, you can go pretty much anywhere.
