In the 3+ years DH has been a resident we have never taken a "real" family vacation. I usually can't take off on the weeks he has vacation, so he stays home, catches up on sleep or errands, and I just work. We are in need of some recharging-- it has been a tough year. Next year our vacation time will be focused on our move for fellowship (fingers crossed that we match)-- finding places to live, finding schools for the kids, finding a job for me, etc. So this is our last chance for a while to take a "real" vacation. We have a week vacation in May (preordained by the hospital, and this is his last vacation until 2013).
We want a simple beach vacation. I have family that own a place in Cozumel, so I thought this would work great. We have a 2.5yo DD and a 1 y.o. DS. By staying at our family's place, we have guaranteed laundry facilities, a kitchen at our disposal, someone who knows the lay of the land, and free lodging. With young kids, we know we'll be spending a lot of down time at the house during naps (if they nap), but they live right by the marina so it's a nice place to hang out.
But it's still an international destination and I'm just having second thoughts about everything. My worries:
Is this trip a terrible idea? I feel like with all this stress, we should just fly to Florida and call it a day. The $400 we'd save from keeping DS on our laps would pay for a cheap hotel, and at least we're still in the U.S.
Any advice or suggestions?? Apologies in advance- I know this is a stupid thing to complain about.

- There are no direct flights from our closest airport. We will have to do a layover. And we've never flown that far with the kids. DD has been on 1 plane which was a 2 hour flight. Granted, she is older now, but one never knows.
- Since it's an international flight, I have to buy a ticket for our youngest even though he's 1. That adds about $400 minimum to the trip. Not cheap. The whole point is to have a cheaper vacation at the beach.
- We've stayed overnight before but only at familiar places like our in-laws house. DD does OK sleeping in a regular bed, but DS is harder to predict. What if we do terribly sleeping there? It's not like we can hop on the next flight back.
- We have to think about water quality, health care coverage in another country, cell phone coverage, etc.
- (In case you were wondering, we already went through the hell of getting them passports. So that's taken care of, but that too was no fun and wasn't cheap.)
