  • Night Terrors

II figure N is way too young for these but she had an episode last night that was weird. She has been an awesome sleeper since about two months...she would sleep from 10 pm to 5 am, wake up to "sleep eat" and then sleep with us until 7 or 8. Lately she has been really clingy, will freak out if I leave her alone in a room or walk away, and has been waking up more easily at night. The past week or so she will not sleep soundly unless she is held/sleeping with us. Doesn't seem too unusual from what I've heard though.

Last night we put her to bed and about an hour later she started screaming. J went I get her but he couldn't calm her down at all, normally all it takes is shushing and rocking and she is asleep or just wide awake and happy. This time she wouldn't wake up or open her eyes. The only thing that calmed her was nursing. She never really woke up. That's odd for her. J tried laying her down again and she immediately started screaming again, but didn't wake up. We tried a couple of times and as soon as we wasn't held she freaked even though she still looked like she was sleeping. Eventually she just ended up with us all night. I tried putting her down after she had been soundly sleeping with us for an hour and still no dice. She was fine this morning.

I guess none of this really sounds like night terrors except the initial waking reaction. She just has never done this before...it seemed really odd. I initially thought she was in pain but we couldn't figure anything out. This is normal right?

My dd's sleep stuff goes awry right before she does something developmental! Maybe N is on the cusp? This also happened when dd started teething or if she was getting a cold. I think she is a little young for night terrors, but every kid is different. ((hugs))

Agh, Ansley did something similar for a few nights last week and it freaked me out! I actually took her to the pediatrician because I thought she might have an ear infection or something! She was just screaming and would NOT be put down. I slept half the night on the couch nursing her because it was the only thing to calm her down.
I gave her ibuprofin the next night and she seemed fine for about 7 hours, so I think it must have been pain. Is she maybe teething?
Hope she sleeps better tonight! poor little babah!

She's definitely teething. Maybe that's it.

Hmm...I found this in related posts:

I guess Amy doesn't post anymore, but our experience was similar, though not quite that bad and this is the first time it has happened.

Sounds like a developmental milestone, or teething. Poor N!
Not sure how you feel about this, but - ibuprofen and then comfort nursing is always a good cocktail at our house.

I agree with the teething/milestone. Likely a combination of the two. Hope tonight goes better!

Yep, this is exactly how DS behaves when cutting teeth. I swear it literally looks like he's crying in his sleep. It's very sad. Poor girl (and poor sleep deprived parents)

K1 has had night terrors. It's like sleepwalking but instead of walking or talking, he's screaming and thrashing and his eyes are open. It looks like he's awake but he's not and he cannot be calmed. Then it stops as suddenly as it started, he'll sleep peacefully the rest of the night and does not remember the episode. They started when he was a little over a year. A co-worker warned me about it because his kid had them and it scared the cr@p out of him. I've read that sleep terrors and sleep walking are related behaviours and are genetic. My brother used to sleepwalk so I guess that's where K1 gets it.

She did it again during her nap, but my mom was able to calm her. Vgirl, yeah it was banshee like

I'm not digging this whole won't sleep unless held thing and hoping its a fluke

I vaguely remember D doing this. I swear the kid has had nightmares since birth. He used to cry in his sleep. Sometimes comforting would help, sometimes not. But I'm not remembering the specifics.
