  • Teething

DS (6 months tomorrow) has had a miserable few days with teething. His first teeth have just broken through the gum in the last two days. Daytime is not too bad, he can be distracted with toys and cold teething rings but he has been waking several times a night whimpering (he rarely cries). Tylenol seems to help ease the pain but he is still waking up often. He slept a bit better last night, only woke twice but he is very clingy today, won't let me leave his side which is unlike him.
I have no idea how long this could go on for! Until his teeth come all the way through? He is always so easygoing and happy, it kills me to see him so upset.

6 months you can use Motrin, I believe. It always seemed to work better on teething. Anyone else remember if this is correct?

Teething just sucks: they often have pain and cry for quite a while before anything pops up.
Hopefully he gets them close together and it can be a big blur that ends faster.

My kids teethe terribly. Months for a single tooth. DS has 4 teeth at 14 months. Motrin & oragel are fantastic. We only use oragel for falling asleep, it takes the edge off. Also, damp, cool rags seem to feel really nice. DD loved rags & teethers, DS likes his own fist.

ETA: I avoid Hyland's Teething Tablets bc they found irregular levels of Belladonna. Actually, I generally avoid anything that claims to be "natural" or "homeopathic" anyway.

Teething is the bain of my existence. The one non-medical thing that seems to take the edge off is amber necklace. Total voo doo and I have no idea what it does but he doesn't drool when wearing it and seems less cranky. Doesn't really help with night wakings though but definitely makes him happier during the day.

That is scary about the Belladonna. I thought it was a no no for babies.

DH is reluctant to give him Motrin or oragel so it really limits our options. C's 6 month appointment is Friday so if the pedi approves them he may be okay with it. He's super cautious about meds and it does not help that he's working in the PICU this month.

I'm really curious about the amber. I'll have to give that a try.

He's been showing signs of teething for 2 months but only having trouble sleeping since they started poking through. I think there are 3 or 4 coming at once.

I got his necklace at a local natural baby boutique. They also had some natural rub for the gums but DS has so much saliva that any kind of rub is washed off in minutes.

Atropa Belladonna, despite its history as a beauty aid, is Deadly Nightshade which is a poison to adults and children alike. 1-2 berries can be lethal to a grown adult. I don't trust a company that fails to test safety (it's a supplement, no FDA testing required) AND fails to carefully measure concentrations of a very well known poison. *steps off soap box*

ETA: Completely understand oragel concerns, our ped ok'd it. His primary concern was parental overuse, which since we use it no more than 1-2 times/day periodically, was a non issue.

Frozen bagels were a decent teething ring for mine. We always used baby Tylenol as well but I think mostly when they were older than six months.

Oh- with dd we did frozen breast milk Popsicles too. It's messy, but she loved it.

We just did Motrin and Tylenol - mostly Tylenol because it was less messy, but Motrin before bed. We bought one of almost every teether with A - made not a lot of difference

No advice, because we're not quite there yet, but lots of sympathy! I am no looking forward to teething at all.

DS is not a big fan of teethers but I still give them to him. They may help for the 30 seconds he chews on them. He had his 6 month appointment today and got 4 shots, poor baby. He has been doing a better job of getting himself back to sleep the last two nights so hopefully the worst is over. It doesn't help that he is going through a clingy phase, doesn't want me to leave his side. Our little monster in 95th+ percentile in everything, 99th for head circumference. Thank you DH ha!
This pedi kind of irritates me and she wants us to go back before we move. He turns 9 months after we move so I'm thinking of just setting up an appt in the new place.

I'd wait and find a pediatrician as soon as you move, in case you need to see them before his one-year appt.

Teething just sucks, and my kids' teeth also took weeks/months (freaking molars). We did Motrin more than Tylenol, and on the really bad nights, we'd stagger them. Motrin is every 6 hours, and Tylenol is every 4, so we'd start with a dose of Motrin before bed, then give Tylenol at the first wakeup.

I'm grumpy and tired this morning, but I think if your DH is going to deny pain relief for your son, he should handle some/all of the wakeups. You need a break!

My dd had no issues with teething, which is amazing, because basically every milestone that can go wrong would throw a wrench into our lives.
Dd did like her Sophie the Giraffe, especially after some time in the freezer. She also liked chewing on towels that I had put in the freezer as well.

I think we're over the worst of it (this time around anyway). He slept well the last three nights including a 9 hour stretch last night! He's in a much better mood and you can see his two little teeth when he smiles now, which is soo adorable!
DH was actually pretty good about getting up during teething but I think he has learned his lesson in that DS needs some pain relief at night if he's that fussy.
I never though to freeze sophie the giraffe. I'll try it all next time around.
