  • Tummy Problems - would you go in?

So the little twin has had stomach issues. He was SUPER colicky and we finally switched him to hypoallergenic formula. His crying has been considerably better.

He has been on the new formula (I totally stopped giving him breast milk - but I'm freezing a ton in case he can tolerate it at some point soon) for about two weeks. On or around last Wednesday he started pooping about 8 times a day. I assume it's the formula, but I'm hesitant to switch since the crying has been so much better. Anyway, one of the NICU Nurse's that babysits for us said it wasn't normal at this point (13 weeks) to be pooping so much and she worried he is losing weight (it's hard to say - he is the little twin and his brother weighs 4 or 5lbs more than him), so she suggested I take him in for a weight check.

Ok - no problem. I have a babysitter today and can totally do that. The only issue is that I have to take him in during sick kid hours..... And that terrifies me.

Would you take him in, or would you just let it go? I have these people coming from this county run developmental program (it's free because they were in the NICU) on December 1st - should I just wait until then to see if he is really losing weight? I just don't want him (and his brother) to get sick from going to the doctor if he doesn't really need to go.

I would take him in and just keep him close, covered in a stroller or wear him.
I think there's a bigger chance of them picking things up when they're mobile.
    I hope he's better soon!

Yep, I'd just go and wear him.

If he's had that much pooping for several days, I'd probably call the pediatrician and ask if they want to see him. If so, I agree that the chances are slim that he'd get something as long as you keep him in his carrier and wash your own hands after touching anything.

You need to go in. If it makes you feel any better, none of our six kiddos has ever picked up a virus at the doctors office and I've never heard of sick kid vs well kid hours. Ours have aways just been in the waiting room with whatever yuck is there.

Hugs! Hope his tummy issues resolve soon!

Also, our pedi has a policy that any child under 3 months doesn't wait in the waiting room (and yours qualify as preemies since they're younger than their actual age). I'd call and ask if they have this type of accommodation or if an exception can be made to allow for it.

Is there a BFing support group you can take them to and weigh them both? I used that option a lot when I was home with E and concerned about weight between doctor's appointments. Instead of stressing about germs in the doctor's office, I got to put her on the scale as many times as I wanted and chat with other moms. They shouldn't even have you in the waiting area more than 5 minutes.

And poop. Is he pooping after meals or in between? What is the poop like? Does it seem different than his baseline? E had a recent bout of weird poop, probably related to adenovirus. I was starting to get worried, but DH felt that as long as it was after meals (and it always is, her gastrocolic reflex is strong), then there was nothing to be worried about. Again, it all depends on the constellation of symptoms as to whether or not to take him in. YMMV.

I hope things turn out for the best and that the little guy is feeling better soon!

What the others said, go in if you haven't. I wonder if the poor little guy just has a bug?

I took him. I didn't notice any obviously sick kids. I'm such a germaphobe, I really need to get over it.

Anyway, he is gaining at the same pace as before. And the poop is always within about 10min of eating. Once or twice its happened in between feelings - but very rare. They don't think there is any reason to switch him to something new. (Unless I want to to give him breastmilk again... Which I don't.... Unless he starts crying again anyway.).

Thanks for the advice! We'll see how this continues to unfold.

That's a relief! I'm glad you went in, just in case. Don't worry - two boys will cure you of any germophobia!
