  • Biting

I just got the call that C bit a kid at school. I knew this was coming - he's been biting at home, and we've been working on breaking the behavior. For now it's just a phone call and an incident report, but I think after enough bites it becomes a bigger deal. Any tips for breaking it?

    Biting

Is he teething? Can you give him NSAIDS or anything to decrease pain (and urge to stimulate teeth/sore gums)? In my experience, it's a stage and consistent response between home and daycare helps, but nothing but time really breaks it.

How old is he? Biting is pretty normal up to age 2.

He may be, but I don't think that's the issue. He has all of his teeth except his lower canines and 2yo molars.

He's 18 months. They didn't seem super concerned about it, they just have to call and notify me. I just want to make sure it doesn't get to be a bigger problem.

Usually he does it when he's mad and wants something, either more attention or something I have that he can't have. I'll have to try and talk to his teacher and find out exactly what happened.

Went through this here too. #2 had a really bad stage for a few months, but he was with the nanny, so it wasn't as much of a problem. #3 does this as well, but not as bad and mostly accompanied with an evil little smile so I think he's just having fun.

I've had 3 biters. Two were normal and one was not. What you are describing is developmentally normal and will drop off once he has a bigger vocabulary and can express his frustration better.

So, apparently the kid C bit sat on him first. I'll still discourage it, but definitely less concerned now.

C bit a kid again today. They're watching him closely for the rest of the day. This is his first week in a new class for summer camp - a lot of the kids are the same, but there are some new ones, and the teachers are new for him too.

FWIW, Nate is still threatening to bite his siblings regularly for fun and has in retaliation a few times. Jason did that too at this age. I think it is a pretty normal thing at this point.

I know it's still normal, but it's just frustrating. He was actually trying to bite me last week during swimming lessons. They said they'd keep a closer eye on him and continue to work with him and remind him that teeth are not for biting. I guess on the plus side, if they kick him out, we're almost done anyway?

This probably isn't helpful but my 8yo bit his brother during a playdate today.
