Wow Angie. I hope that they will be able to stabilize the knee enough that he'll be able to play the sports he loves so much.

Re: Anyone had a serious sports injury in a child?

Thanks for the online ortho consults! The guy we are seeing is a sports med guy trained at Temple's program. He is consulting partners about the MRI films and will set up a meeting with DH and I about our surgical options after they have a plan. We know the Clinic's ortho department head personally - his son was on DS's soccer team last year - so we thought we might sidebar him and ask who he'd send his son to with this type of injury. (The boys are the same age and have the same sports profile....) I believe the doc was suggesting some surgical procedure now that would be followed by a second reconstruction when he is around 15 and the growth plates have closed. I'm not sure if the issue is with the auto graft (I think they said hamstring?) or with the knee part of the operation. *sigh*

I took DH along to look all doctorish and help get better info, but he changed in to torn jeans before we went. Then, when he did mention that he was a surgeon at UH as well, the conversation turned in to a "Do you know...." and "Where'd you train?" gabfest with little interest in DS's actual ailment. So much for doctor hubbies helping with kid's doctor appointments.

I'll update again when we have a surgical plan. I think DS is actually enjoying the attention he gets at school from being "injured". He has a two hour PT appointment on Monday.

Re: Anyone had a serious sports injury in a child?

So....today's depressing update. After viewing the films, sports med ortho guy says we need to wait for several years to do the repair. His training peeps back at Temple concur. DH spoke to a different sports med guy who also says we should wait. Bleh. Bleh. BLEH. We may go for one more consult, but so far....it ain't looking good.

DS has total teary eyes when we talk about it. I now wish we had just lied to him about all developments and just told him we wanted him to take a season off. He would have loved that....it would have been a break. Now, he is being told he isn't going to play again till high school Then, who knows if he will make a team. Bummer. It's our own fault for pushing the soccer thing. OVERUSE!!!! I'm a believer! Don't overplay your kids before high school! It isn't worth it!

This is so unfair for an eleven year old. Still, I keep telling myself it's not a tumor. It's just a knee injury. :badday:

We go to PT on Monday and they want him to wear a brace when he runs around.

          I hope he grows fast.

              That sucks Angie.

If he's super into sports though, has he tried swimming?

I'm sorry to hear it Angie. Tough for an 11 year old -- even harder for mom and dad!

                    Wow... That is terrible.

Is swimming an option? It can be really fun, and uber competetive to give him that chance to use his athletic gifts... Plus the swim team can be a fun team dynamic, too.

How frustrating. I'm sorry, Angie. Not that I'd have an easy time sending my 11 year old off to surgery...but to see him so disappointed really stinks.

That stinks, Angie. If he does start swimming, no water polo and no breast stroke, according to my DH, who did both in HS and regrets the damage to his knees to this day...

Re: Anyone had a serious sports injury in a child?

Your situation has been on my mind a little, and it made me think of the book I am reading "Wonder of Girls"- I know it doesn't apply to a boy, but the author is a volunteer soccer coach and in the start of the book was discussing soccer with young kids. He said that neurologically the brain does not learn new footwork after about age 10 or so, and after that point it's very hard to get into soccer because the footwork won't be quite "there". Since your son has learned the footwork, it's stored somewhere in his brain and so if that is what he wants to do in high school, and if the docs give him the all clear, I think you should feel optimistic about that option being available.

I was a "jock" in high school, and for me my athletics were my life. I also observed that athletic kids generally could make the team, regardless of how much "experience" they had. A lot of boys don't do football until they are sophomores or so, becuase the parents don't let them. If they are well-coordinated, though, and athletically gifted, it still may be an option. As it may be for your son.

I'm sorry this has happened, though. I hope that he has a successful surgery and a good recovery.
