Yet another thread on kids growing up too soon. Sorry, I have to vent.

My son has NOTHING that fits him for Spring so I have been shopping. Um, is anyone else grossed out by all the chains, skulls and crossbones, faded dingey shirts priced at $14 and up, and everything else that is out there for school aged boys? Old Navy was the worst offender of this kind of wear. I just want some quality plain striped tees and some plain polos which don't break the bank. I splurged on two polos from Hanna Anderson, but I need staples. There is just so much gross stuff out there. (I know, I just need to buckle up because it will be worse for girls this age).

My second rant on this issue is that my son just attended a 3rd grade girl's birthday party from our neighborhood. There were almost no toys for presents, all tween type stuff. Apparently, some girls are "done" with toys by third grade? I'm sure that this isn't representative for all kids, but this breaks my heart. I was the Barbie and fashion plates queen in third grade. I can tell you that my son and all his friends are still enraptured by Legos and transformers, but are girls still into make believe and toys in elementary school? Anyone?

In sum, this thread has nothing profound or new, just yet another observation on a topic that we are seriously doing an injustice to our kids.

    Re: Yet another...

I usually have better luck finding staples at a Target (or a Fred Meyers, when I lived near one...)

Then there are the sales at gymboree, where they still keep the clothes innocent, I think. Sometimes there are *decent* deals for boy clothes.

We went to a 1st graders party and her parents said that all she wanted was high school musical stuff. She has no older siblings or anything, so the parents are apparently pushing HSM on her... I can definitely see some 3rd grade kids I know not wanting anything to do with Barbies anymore. Some of them move on to the "Bratz" type of Barbie (lots of makeup, wierder body shapes). Kate didn't get rid of all that stuff until she was going to middle school- and then she boxed them up but kept most toys in her room because she didn't quite want to share with Isabel. (And she still plays with her doll toys on occassion-- but it's a secret.)

      I agree wholeheartedly!

I hate the clothes out there for little boys. At 5, my son is growing like a weed on steroids (only no bulk, just up and up and up!) The 6 slim jeans that I bought in fall are all worn though at the knees and they are now just the right length, but are still way too big in the waist. I hate all of the cammo stuff out there for little ones, but I think dressing a little girl like Brittney Spears is worse.

I agree with you Kelly, and have been fighting the skulls, etc. for several years. I have good luck at Kohl's for boys' clothes.....I would say 95% of the clothes my boys currently wear came from there. Target is good in a pinch, too, but their clothes seem to run a little smaller and I don't really have small kids, so we mostly end up at Kohl's.

I don't think we're at the skull-and-bones stage yet , but I've had lots of luck at Kohl's and Target as well.

Oh, I've seen skull and bones for 2 year olds... You'll get there.

What drives me nuts are the slogan T-shirts.

                "Too Cool To Care"
"If it's too loud, you're too old."
                etc.

                  Re: Yet another...

Please, hold me back! This is my biggest pet peeve right now. I am so disgusted with the clothes for girls past the toddler age. My oldest is moving to size 7 and everything looks cheaply made and trampy even at Target and Kohls. I bought two t-shirts at Kohls and after one wear they had holes in them. Target has jacked up their prices too. :| We have been getting some stuff there.

I have three kids to pass the clothes through. I am about ready to head to Gymboree because their stuff holds up and doesn't look like it is made for a hoochy mama. Lands End is pricier, but still has an age appropriate look. My kids won't wear whales on their skirts, but the boys clothes are pretty classic. We recently hit an outlet mall which had some decent prices.

I hear where all of you are coming from!

I just spent my Gymbucks and was pleased with what I found (my parents spend money on the kids and then give us their Gymbucks -- it's awesome.).

IF you can get the clothes drastically reduced I can always find something I like that is age appropriate there. DS is in a 4T now and I found some really cute "shark" and "manta ray" T-shirts for summer or layering which is nice because the kid is an ocean creature encyclopedia! (...and now that these clothes will go to baby #3 I'm even happier to find cute stuff that isn't too old for him!)

I found LOTS of clearanced stuff for DD -- the girl will never have just one outfit in her closet to choose from. She is almost always a 6 or 6X now (won't be 6 until October) and I cringe and what I see at other stores. Like Annie said, even Target gets pretty trampy after you move out of the toddler section. I found a PLAIN summer dress there recently and was thrilled. I felt like I hit the jackpot.

I can't even stomach "princess" or anything close on t-shirts and sweats. I LIKE PLAIN STUFF that allows children to just "be!"

DS likes pirates and I have noticed all the "grunge style" stuff Kelly is talking about. Somehow I found a plain blue t-shirt with a smiling skull and crossbones that says "a pirates life for me." It's cute, not dark and pre-goth.

I cringe when I think of DD shopping for clothes when she's 13. (shudder)

                      Re: Yet another...

I was at an aeropostale outlet and there was a mom with her young teens- who were trying on the henley shirts that can't button up because they're designed that way-- to let your cami show. The mom kept saying, "Oh that's really cute! Is it comfortable? Do you want me to buy it? I really like it!" The girls looked totally embarrassed but let the mom buy them these waaaaay too small shirts.

OMG. I hadn't even THOUGHT about underclothes that are sexy for young girls just developing.

Oh, Gawd, Make it stop. [Hands over ears shouting "LA LA LA"]. I'm so not ready for this.

We do more Gymboree and Hanna Anderson than I would like to admit. Hannas last FOREVER. Seriously. Their survivor jacket and sweat pants ensemble last two years for each of my kids. Hanna is never reasonably priced though. Gymboree can be the equivalent of good Target prices is you work their sales and gymbucks. I know that children's clothes and books are one area where my budget is waaayyyy out of whack.

I will second Kelly's Sears suggestion. They carry Lands End and do a good job w/the basics.
Talbots kids store are really nice age appropriate basics. Their clothes can be expensive, but are well made. Ask a mgr to add you to their client list, and give you call when the sales start!
                            Talbots also has great outlets!

I don't have to worry yet, but I admit I did get Daegan one of the Target grafic tees.....it has a little boy on it in the "gun show" pose and it says "Take me to the vet because these puppies are sick."

But I saw those mr. grumpy and mischief shirts and the "lock up your daughters" onesies and had to pass. I tried looking for little girl clothes and secretly prayed I wouldn't have to worry about that!! (I do know that now I've jinxed myself to twin girls! )
