    Re: First Day Back?

As Crunchy as the Crunchy School is, we have some very no-nonsense teachers. The parents are crunchy and the administration is crunchy, the teachers have all left the public school system because they got tired of the politics.

Nikolai's teacher this year is the Lead Teacher and he's just phenomenal. I am also very interested to see how the dude does with a male teacher. I think he'll have a very interesting experience.

I think you are right. There will be more of a routine in a week or two. You might even find another parent to walk him in once he is comfortable.

I agree about the strict/no nonsense teacher. I have a friend who is a first grade teacher and she feels it is important to set the tone right from the first day. I'm sure she comes across as being strict.

Kids typically meet the expectations that are required of them. I say set the expected behavior tone HIGH and everything will follow. If the expectations are low, kids will meet only those requirements.
Let's hear it for the strict but fair teachers!

we just got home from the equally frustrating pick-up. i did fine, thanks for asking jenn. dh on the other hand.....

so...my very first gripe as a parent with a kiddo in school.

he has a folder. one side is take home (leave home) and the other is take home, but bring back.

so, he has 'homework'. no biggie. he has until friday to return it. i looked over his work from today. they started with the letter, L. he had to trace the line to make a capital L and a lower case l. he traced it three times. she wrote 'one trace only please'

friggen really? give me a break. the kid loves to write letters, his name, anything we spell for him...and LOVES to draw. is it really a problem that he traced it 3 times? WTF? i'm so totally annoyed.

I know what you mean. Unfortunately, it is completely stupid, and one of the first completely stupid things in a string of completely stupid things designed to beat to the love of learning and school out of your child. I sound like a propenent for homeschool, don't I? I'm not, btw, but these inane and completely moronic things will happen, over and over and over again. So, I guess you just have to get used to it.

Honestly, I'd be thrilled if the assignment was, "only trace it once." It swings, in my opinion, from that side of the pendulum to the ultra repetitive tedium end of things in an all-fired hurry. Write these spelling words 20 times each, define them, and use them in a sentence. Yes, I know he scored 100% on the pretest, but all the other kids have to do it. Stupid.

It will settle down with the pickings up and droppings off, but there is a reason my son rides the bus. I was very fortunate in Kindergarten that the bus picked up my ds at our house and dropped him there too. It was, in a word, sublime.

i can see your point, annie..it's just so...annoying. it's like she is squashing his work already..and maybe he was just trying to perfect the L?

              *sigh*

this morning sucked. fay has come to dump her rain on us. the traffic was still terrible. i had to get my flock to follow me thru the rain and puddles. (what? no umbrella? you don't say. )

i got lost because we came in on a different side. ds was begging me for a bowl to puke in, and crying for me to take him home. i took him to the bathroom to settle him, which helped...and...and...he STILL cannot button the shorts i put him in today.

              i'm so over this. already.

it will get better Sylvia. It's too bad they started the year on a Monday, rather than giving them a short week to get used to it. Maybe you could call the office and ask what they suggest as far as drop offs? I can't imagine they really expect you (or even want you) to trudge in w/3 kids in tow every morning.

                  Re: First Day Back?

Our first day will be on the September 2nd. Gotta love it when politicians are unduly influenced by the tourism industry into pushing the start date of school until after labor day...

I image the first day will be a bit chaotic, but yesterday we showed him where he will line up in the morning and after school, where the classroom is etc. Luckily it is right next to his class from last year so that won't be too bad. The biggest question for me is that he will be getting hot lunch as school (no way am I going to add trying to make a lunch for a somewhat finicky kid where peanut butter is not allowed into my daily routine - that would be suicide!) and it is on a debit card system. Apparently the teachers hand out the cards each day and the kids turn them in to the lunch lady... God help us if he manages to lose it...

His teach last year was very strict and not particularly affectionate. She was freaking fantastic. He loved going to school and her ability to bring the best out of kids is definately why she won the teach of the year award for the greater metro area (1.something million).

Ours was yesterday....the big boys had the "best first day ever"...I was so relieved I almost threw up. After 4 schools in 3 years they needed a break and seemed to have caught one. They each made 3 friends and loved their teachers!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now if only I could get the 2 yo old stop throwing himself on the floor crying because they are going to school and he isn't..............

I need to download my photos.

Yesterday was the first day back for DD1 and DD2. DD1 was so nervous that she couldn't eat much dinner the night before but she is fine now. Still, by 6:30 last night, I was ready to duct tape them to a chair. I forgot about the started school nuttiness. I'm going to wear them down at the playground this afternoon before bringing them home.

                            Re: First Day Back?

DS started preschool on Tuesday and LOVES it. He was already friends with a couple kids in his class so that seemed to help with first day jitters. The other moms/families are all very nice so I think this will be a great year.

Preschool is just 3 days a week for 3 hours each day and it's amazing how much I can get done in that little bit of time. I forgot how easy it is to run errands with just a baby in tow. I miss my boy when he's gone, but it has been nice to get some one-on-one time in with my girl.
