  • A humbling, honest, and funny view of me through my seven year old son's eyes...

Everyday my life is rich with Saturday Night Live material.

DS #1 : Hey Mom remember how I said that you don't walk like other moms?

Me: Yes? (feeling fairly certain that my well intentioned seven year old is going to say something horribly embarrassing, true, or both.)

DS #1: Well I know who you walk like. The women athletes on TV ...you know the Olympics! They walk like they want to take someones face off. (small pause)
Except they are a LOT taller than you mom. SO MUCH TALLER. (I try not to sigh.)
And they look much more fierce. Like they want to WIN EVERYTHING. (more pausing)

You walk like them. Do you want to win everything? Is that why we are the first people at the bus stop everyday?

As a former college athlete this just cracks me up. A tiny part of me is pleased that I STILL walk like an athlete...according to my seven year old. I've got that going for me, which is nice.

        Love it!

Do you want to take someone's face off? Sometimes I do.

            Apparently I'm a competitive walker.

That's awesome. My daughter was doing her usual monthly perusal of the American Girl catalogue and there was a doll running outfit and a doll hiking outfit. DD turned to me and said, "Mom, they have a doll outfit for you!". Uh, what not the glamourous heals and pearls?

My mom had a similar swagger, but she wasn't a college athlete. It was this "Don't even *ask* for anything." demeanor.
My sister and I used to hum Strauss's "Thus Spake Zarathrustra," and tell my dad that she was "on the war path."
