  • School year '13-'14

Tomorrow is the first day of preschool for DD. This is the first year she's going full time 8-3pm 5 days a week. I'm really sad about this. Thank goodness the child LOVES school and other kids and separates from me pretty easily when it comes to school. Of all things for me to freak about... I cry at the thought of her sleeping on the floor for nap. They provide nap mats. I've also bought a memory foam nap mat blanket combo to go on top of that, but I wish it was thicker. I don't know what it is. She's my baby and I can't get over her being on some cold hard floor.

Anyways, happy first day of school everyone!! Post some pics of those cuties if you don't mind sharing!

Aww! I bet she'll think it's lots of fun! We just switched DD to a toddler bed, and she's been sleeping on the floor every night by her own choice!

My kids start preschool on the 26th/27th. I have DS going 5 half-days per week, and DD will go Tuesdays and Thursdays half days. We'll see how they do; I may end up switching them both to MWF in the spring if DS seems overwhelmed, but he loved going three days last year, and I wasn't ready to send DD three days per week yet this semester, but I wanted some overlapping preschool time since DS has dropped his nap.

Mine start 9/3 and 9/11 respectively...except we're going out of town for up to a week starting 9/6 so DD will probably miss most of her first week! Oh, well. DS is going five days per week for the first time, starting first grade. We still don't know what teacher he'll have. Pretty nervous for him and kind of bummed to have him out of the house so much! (School is 9-3:30, so including the bus ride he's out of the house from about 8:30-4.) DD is going three half days per week, MWTh afternoons, with the Thursday session having "pre-kindergarten" activities for the 4s and 5s. I'll be doing my working shifts in the preschool classroom, and hopefully I'll be able to pick up some volunteer time in the first grade class as well.

Tomorrow is our first day. All my kids will be in school-- dd4 starts kinder (her bday is a few days away). I'm pretty conflicted about this. I'm sad that she's growing up and my last child is going to school. But I'm already annoyed at the amount of driving I'm going to be doing for the next 9 months.

Dd17 starts her senior year in high school tomorrow, at the same time as our last baby starts her first year Of full day school.

Ds12 and dd12 start 7th grade. Ds9 starts 4th (he's the one I'm most worried about) and dd4 goes to kinder. Ds9 told dd4 to not worry-- he'll show her where her class is and everything. So sweet... But we are all soooooo grumpy in the morning except for ds12 and dd4--- the rest of us: grumps. I'm hoping we will make it through tomorrow morning ok!!

I will be driving for school drop offs from 7:30 to 8:30, then school pick ups from 2:00 to 3:20, then after school activities from 3:20 until around 6:30 to 8 every day.... So, I'm not so much looking forward to all this. I could use another week or two of summer.

D starts 1st today and K starts VPK. And I'm missing it. . I'm at an acupuncture course. I also missed meet-n-greet for D's teacher but my mom said she's nice and a good fit for him. K's teacher starts today and is a brand new VPK teacher. I'm a bit nervous about that one, but K's my easy going middle kid, so I think it'll be fine. The part with him that I'm most worried about is the provided lunch. They don't let in outside food really and are completely peanut-free. K is *the* pickiest eater! They assure me they won't let him go hungry...

P is staying with my mom, and my niece is joining her. It's going to be girl-fest. Maybe my P will calm down a bit????

We've been in a week and today have two out sick, lol.

Dd19 starts her sophomore year in college this Wed but she has been back on campus since the 8th doing RA training and welcoming new residents. She is done with summer and ready for classes. I'm a little worried about her schedule (calc, genetics, organic, speech, plus dance company rehearsals and RA duties). I suspect we will see very little if her this year.

DS17 is a junior and is not loving the work that comes with junior year. He has dropped sports in favor of sport photography (worked all summer for an awesome new lense) and some other extra curriculars.

DS13 is in 8th grade. He is having a great year so far (mostly because its football season). His main teacher is fine, nothing to write home about though.

DD11 is in 6th grade and is tired of school uniforms, lol. So far school is good even though her teacher is the cranky one. She told the kids in science that people get Alzheimer's disease because they are lazy and don't use their brains. Dd11 was pissed by the time she got home. She is still dance 8-10 hours per week but has also added volleyball and golf.

DD4 is in preK. After a week she is not loving it. It's an all day program and probably more than she needs. We'll give it a good 6 weeks and reevaluate. It's too expensive to just deal with misery for a year.

DD5 started with a ridiculous 90 minute day last Thursday, a half day Friday, no school today because of construction at the church/school and will start her full day, 7:50-3:05 tomorrow. She is SO excited to be in Kindergarten. She so badly wants friends and I hope the friend issue doesn't come back to bite her. She's already saying there is a girl in her class that is mean to her and I can't figure out who it is. She sits at a table with 4-5 kids and I don't think she knows any of them so hopefully she will get to know them quickly.

DS3 starts preschool on the 3rd, he'll go all day on Tuesdays & Thursdays but his actual class is afternoons from 12:15-2:45 so we'll see if his sleep schedule becomes an issue. He gave us his nap eons ago but has been waking up early since we potty trained him which has caused a pseudo-nap. But he is SUPER excited to be in school just like his big sis!

Ryan is pretty excited about his schedule, and he keeps talking about breaking the record for number of AP classes taken and being valedictorian. It's good to see him happy and confident. He wasn't able to make the golf team again this year, and he was really disappointed, but he should make bowling without a problem. He'll participate in some golf tournaments outside of school. His schedule is:

                    1.AP World History
                    2. Precalculus Honors
                    3. Spanish 3 Honors
                    4. English 2 Honors
                    5. AP Chemistry
                    6. Biology Honors
                    7. AP Psychology

Alexia has a new teacher this year, after having the same one for the past two years. They split up the gifted class into two. I can't imagine that there are actually that many gifted students, but who knows. Her teacher is supposed to be stricter this year, but we'll see how Alexia does. I think she could sometimes use a little firmness.

I hope they have a great first day today!

                        Mine start Wednesday.

Cora is going into kindergarten. I plan to spend the morning sobbing over her baby pictures. (Not really, but history says I may cry a little after I leave.) Her open house and orientation are tonight. She's my easy-going and flexible one, and I think she'll be fine. Still a little anxiety, though; last night at bedtime we had to go over *again* the plan of what would happen if she and her sister were ever orphaned. I am hoping that at orientation they explain the pickup lines and the lunches really well, because I don't know what I'm doing with either of those.

                        Her school day is 8:00-2:50.

There's a(nother) new school being built and subsequent rezoning going on in our area, so we're actually not sure if she'll be going to the same school next year or not. TBD later this year. Trying to focus on the now, but that's bothering me in the back of my mind.

School has kind of snuck up on us because we're in the middle of slowly moving into our new house. Word to the wise: don't try to buy uniforms or school supplies the week before school starts, because that stuff sells out.

Hazel has two years of preschool left, and is starting at a new place. Both girls have gone to a very good church-basement preschool for the past two years, but our most favorite-est teacher from there (really, I think she's got the gift) has left and is starting her own school at her home--she had her garage converted to a classroom over the spring and summer. There's actually a whole long story here, but the teacher left suddenly in the middle of last year, and I'm not thrilled about having to choose between the teacher we prefer and the school setting we prefer. In the end, though, teacher wins. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a smooth launch, though.

Hazel will continue to go M-W-F mornings, but now it's for four hours instead of three, which is good.

Between new house and new schools for both girls, we're really looking at a whole new daily routine and different daily routes traveled this year.
