Oscar started on Thursday of last week. He's doing pre-k 5's at a private mostly Montessori school. He does 4 half days a week. Next year will be kinder. He has most of the same classmates as last year and the same teachers. He was excited to start back. I'll be sad when he outgrows this school!

DS13 starts 8th grade tomorrow. I have loved him being off for the summer, but OMG, he needs structure and school needed to start 2 weeks ago. I hate that summer is so long and then the breaks are few and far between once school begins.

DS9 turns 9 tomorrow and starts 4th grade tomorrow. She is at a great age/ easy stage. She has a brand new teacher to the district. I like that I have no preconceived ideas about what to expect. Although she w

DS4 starts preschool in two weeks. He'll go 2 full days a week.

Got my boys' class rosters today. K1's class is mostly boys and K2's is mostly girls. Like 80% in both instances. Classes started today and my boys will be beginning 6 weeks late. Trying not to be bitter about the whole off cycle thing.

I think we win latest start date. September 10th for my kids!!! Neverending New England summers. It's so perfect right now. I wish the weather would stay this way for months.

Ladybug, I would have enjoyed summer so much more if it weren't for the weather keeping us inside. I so wish they were in school summers and on break in the winter or spring.

              Dude starts Monday the 26th.

The 4th grade dual language teachers team-teach so this will be a first for us. I think it's a good way for them to be introduced to the concept of changing teachers during the day. He'll be with the Math/Science teacher in the morning and switch after lunch to the language arts teacher.

They removed the older kid playground because it "wasn't safe" so now there's only a dirt field. yay. There are two portable buildings that are used for the middle school that were supposed to have been moved over the summer but the design team for the middle school addition is the worst - they're a suburban architect firm who have never done an urban infill school- the first design was so big that it took up what little field we had and then they actually said at a meeting, "kids don't play outside anyway." Yahoos. So the community rallied, tried to get them to think "up" and not "out" and make the building three stories with a smaller footprint. Now I guess its waiting for the Historic Review board to have their say. Typical piss-poor planning of the inner city school district.

So, that's it- count down until Monday.

              J.

I think my fears were on target. She isn't napping. Today they told me she starts to get fussy at every step closer to going down for nap. They finish lunch, fussy. They turn out the lights, fussy. They put her mat down, fussy. I just had to flat out tell them today she's never napped at school and never slept on a FLOOR before. Ok, yes there is a school nap mat, plus her memory foam nap mat blanket combo but still Its The Floor.

ok, end of rant. I feel better. ty.

Dd's preK teacher brought up a really good point about napping.

She said, "it amazes me that any of these kids nap. They come to a strange room with strange people and then even though we lovingly set out the mats and sleeping blankets we are still expecting an enormous amount of trust from these 4 year olds. No way would I be napping, lol"

She went on to say that not all kids sleep but most will eventually get there. Dd didn't nap at first because she was worried the teacher may not hear the fire alarm if it went off so she stayed awake to help (a bit traumatized from the fire drill discussion). Anyway, she finally napped yesterday which was a huge help. Your dd will get there.

I remember when I was little and they did naptime. I'd pull my blanket over my head and just lay quietly with my eyes open. I'd wiggle a finger or toe and feel like I was getting away with something! She'll learn to rest even if she doesn't nap.

Both kids were crying when I picked them up from preschool today. I know it's not the school - they were fine, just tired. But mommy guilt is being a jerk to me right now...

Oh no! What a lousy day. Don't let the mommy guilt get you. They'll feel better after a nap.

We got our first grade assignment...not my last choice of teacher, but not my first. He'll be in with some boys he knows and a couple of nice girls we've known from years past, but not his best friend from down the street, and he'll be with the class clown that was a bad influence on him last year. *angsty angst*

DD's preschool is in the same place as the daycare, so she's just changing rooms. DH asked her today what she thinks about having new teachers and she just shrugged. Guess she's been going there for 2 years, so new room/teachers doesn't phase her. But reading some of the other posts, I'm just so glad that I don't have to deal with uniforms and school supplies. Although I guess our somewhat steep tuition makes up for that.
