Hummmmm where did you find 4 hours to yourself Sounds like you went to town, I bet you'll see good results! We need to figure out what to do with our yard too. The house we bought was owned by renters for years and they let the yard just go. Our grass has been killed off by 80% in the front by the pine needles. We want to see if we are aireigate (crap I'm so off on this spelling that I can't even find it on the online dictionary ) it and try to put maybe some seeds down to see if it will thicken. Yeah that my project whenever I find the time... I'm now seeing the beauty of hiring people to do work on your home

      "aerate"?

Looks like you might have been conflating it with "irrigate", maybe?

Good luck with the lawn! While we're renting out our house in Portland, we're throwing in landscape maintenance, and paying the service ourselves directly; didn't want it going to pot while we were gone. It was stressful because we had to change services just before we moved; the guys we'd had for 8 years decided to get out of maintenance and concentrate on one-time landscaping jobs. Our neighbors tell us the new guys are doing a good job, though.

Despite our complete lack of experience, we've managed to at least keep the yard of the rental house here to a "not the worst yard on the street" level, which is pretty much all we're aiming for.

OK, now it's my turn to spit coffee into the keyboard. That's funny, Sandy! Don't drive by my house now...DH hasn't mowed in 3 weeks. He has basically been living at the hospital. I'm standing behind the fact the DH still hasn't shown me how to start the new mower.

Heh. I think it's been about that long for us, and we have a nice crop of pretty yellow flowers (at least they're not dandilions; they're more like buttercups?) all over the front yard. Like I said "not the worst on the street" is as high as we're aiming.

Your excuse sounds like a perfectly valid one to me! Is your DS old enough to take it over if your DH shows him how?

Actually, this was the most amazing thing...DH took both kids to see our nephew's football game. :thud: I had a Friday night to myself. !!!!! I literally was hauling a** to get this done. I was out there like some crazy gardner in the dark spreading top soil and fertilizer. After I finished, I took an hour long soak in the tub with a good book.

It truly astounds me what my idea of a good time is nowadays.

              Re: crispy

Our lawn gets crispy every year. I'm just not into the whole thing enough to spring for a sprinkler system OR to take the time & money to water the lawn frequently. We'll give it a half-hearted effort for the first 1/2 of summer, but after that, it's pretty much on it's own. It always comes back.

Garrison is pretty much allergic to most things that grow outside, especially grass. If we weren't in the height of ragweed season I might consider letting him mow the grass with a mask on, but I think he would be miserable from the double-whammy of ragweed and freshly cut grass. We really need a good, hard freeze to get rid of all this darn ragweed.

My neighbor's yard guy knocked on my door last week...and I thought the neighbor had sent him over to cut our grass He was just asking if we had our snowplow service lined up yet.

Along the lines of Nellie's "I hate leaf blowers" post - - the constant watering of suburban lawns is a huge waste of water and money, too! Our HOA would be all over us if we never, ever watered (see Mr. Happy posts), but it sickens me to see water literally flowing down the street from poorly aimed irrigation systems. Or well-watered sidewalks.

Oh Kelly - I'm sorry if that came across as though I was criticizing you. I'm not at all - just venting about the absurdity of the whole thing. We water too, just not as religiously as most in my neighborhood. And I'd better have half a million in the bank before I shell out $2 or $3K to install an "irrigation system" for my grass. Farmers need those. Not suburbanites. (IMO )

No, I didn't take it that way at all. It is something I've thought about many a times. At what age will I be immune to peer pressure? Do I really give a crap that my grass is worse than all the other lawns. How much time and energy will I spend on this? Really, can I work myself up into a self doubt over grass?

                        My issues runneth over.

I don't do a thing to my yard.

Who in the hell tries to grow grass in South Texas anyway?

We has a ton of rain so it looks green, whatever "it" is. Some weeds, some grass. I don't care. We went to the bontanical garden yesterday and I got some great xeriscaping ideas. I'm thinking sand and cactus. Why fight Mother Nature?
