  • Shoes in the house

Since we had our floors refinished we took of our shoes before coming in the house. We were supposed to do that for the first few weeks but I think we will stick with it. The floors are so much cleaner! Why didn't I do this sooner?

Are you a shoes off in the house household?

Our neighbors are no shoes in the house and my kids have been playing over there a lot. The consistency between houses is helping.

I'm a slow learner. My kids usually remind me to take my shoes off.

Tara, I'm old too. My feet hurt. I'm serious, my left foot is driving me nuts.

Would those be house shoes to match the housecoat? I'm looking into the same. I am going to need some cozy socks for the winter.

Even if your floors seem dirty, trust me, they could be worse -- like ours used to be!

I will wear my shoes into the house and take them off at my closet but I don't usually wear shoes in the house. DH usually takes his shoes off at the door. We both have house shoes for winters, but since we're mostly carpet we don't wear them otherwise.

We're Japanese this way - no shoes in the house. They go in a basket at the front door. We have house slippers, but usually run around barefoot or with socks.

We're not as bad as they are in Japan though - they have separate slippers for the bathroom! My dad's aunt gives you the stink eye if you come out of the bathroom with the wrong slippers!

We're shoes off too...but since we had the new floors put in, I'm really annoyed by the footprints that get all over the floor from bare feet. I can't convince my children that shoes are a necessity. OH...and dog hair + wood floors = mess, mess, mess. I actually miss my carpet that hid the dust.

Absolutely! (except when we entertain adults -- it's optional then!)

When we had linolium floors and I wasn't the one cleaning them, everyone kept their shoes off. Now that we have ivory carpeting throughout and I'm the one vacuuming, everyone's shoes are off. We keep a stash of slippers for the guests, I wear house flipflops and DH goes barefoot.

I grew up shoes-off, but DH grew up shoes-on. So we're this weird mix where I'll wear my shoes into the house and take them off in the closet. Meanwhile, DH will eventually take off his shoes, but there's no guessing where. I'm trying to get him to be more diligent about taking them off as soon as he gets home, but I guess that's the curse of me wearing heels and him wearing Borns and other comfortable brands!

We also don't have room in our current place for a shoe closet by the door, and I don't like how it looks visually if you came into our house and saw rows and rows of shoes.

I'm thinking I might put a shoe rack in the garage so it is out of the way and a basket by the front door.

Substitute "Korean" for "Japanese" and this is us, too. It's definitely a cultural thing for me first, and then a cleanliness issue. I even feel weird about wearing my shoes in other people's houses, even if they wear them and don't mind if I do.

We have a shoe basket too, Alison! Guests in our home can leave shoes on if they so desire, but our shoes and kids shoes are always off. I, frankly, and I know you are all going to pass out from shock, hate shoes. I would go barefoot all the time if I could.

It took a few years to train DH, and I still have to retrain him occassionally, but the kids are automatic with this now.
