We got the Keurig a few months ago, and although we have the filter basket, we never got through the trial-and-error phase of figuring out how to make good coffee with it. The k-cups are just too easy and good. I hate the waste but I LOVE the convenience. For us, it's great because he might want a cup before work at 9pm, or I might want my first cup at 7 while he's sleeping in till 9, etc. We both get fresh coffee any time we want it.

(We were splitting a 10 cup pot every other day -- microwaving on the second day -- before that.)

Alison, have you noticed your coffee expense increase? I'm afraid those little cups are just so expensive.

Definitely. We figure about $.50 per cup, or $2 per day for the two of us. Better than a latte habit, but not by a ton.

My mom gets the cups from Bed Bath and Beyond when she has a 20% off coupon - or she will sometimes find them at TJ Maxx

I don't know if this is an option, but my husband really likes Starbucks' instant coffee: http://www.starbucks.com/via

He's also got the tumbler for it:

My big coffee maker (a cuisinart) has a 0-4 cup option that heats the water faster so it's done in no time at all.

I make 4 cups for myself in the morning which is really a mug at home and a car mug to take to work.

I have a single cup french press for when I have time and energy to go through the motions (from grinding the beans to waiting for it to brew) and we have a Nespresso for when we're feeling lazy. It's not cheap but much easier to clean than french press.

We have 3 different sizes of French Presses- the smallest makes about 8 oz, the next about 16 or so, and then the normal 8 cup size one. I'd go with the middle sized French Press. I think we got it at Starbucks. Otherwise I'd just do half of my regular French Press.

Can you tell I'm a little addicted to strong coffee?

Thanks for this review Alison. I just saw the instant coffee at Costco today. I was wondering about it-- I thought it would be good for when we travel. I seriously can not drink hotel coffee. I feel like I'm drinking water with a few drops of food coloring in it...

I prefer french press coffee but did not get one for myself because I like to add cream and sugar. To add these to the to go mug would make a mess - but I have not tried it. I also own a single serving french press that I got at TJ Maxx for $5 and has held up for a year now.
In the ToGo mug is too much of a PITA for me. I've used it before, I just don't like it...

Thanks guys - does anyone have suggestions that are not french press or Keurig? I have a single cup french press and while its fine I'd really like something I could load the night before and push a button. I saw something like this one at Kohl's this weekend: http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/kitc...ffee+Maker.jsp

I'd like something that makes into a travel mug because I don't have to worry as much about it getting spilled even if we're staying home.

My DH is an espresso fanatic, but my parents are not (don't know how to use it, used to just a cup of coffee each). So on one of their visits, something similar to what you posted above magically appeared on our counter. It was very simple, I don't think it was programmable, but it made approximately 2 cups only. I'm pretty sure it was inexpensive, but its worked for our guests that prefer a normal, hassle-free cup of coffee. These small machines are gaining in popularity, but it is a little harder to find one that has a timer/all the bells and whistles. Good luck!

Check out this site Cheri. http://astore.amazon.com/travelmug-20 Maybe one of those would work for you.

Cheri, one thing I'd look at is the travel mugs that can be used with those machines. We ended up returning one that could only use its own mugs, because the mugs themselves didn't seal at all. It was just like a normal coffee cup lid with a hole in the top - not at all workable for my commuter-mug-in-backpack use in DC.

I have been researching this too for the exact same reason, DH does not drink coffee and I only need one cup a day. I end up making a pot and drink leftovers the next day. (I know..that is gross)

So I started by looking at what different "pods" my grocery store carried so I wouldn't have to go to a specialty shop to get my coffe and they seemed to have a wide variety of Senseo ones. Godiva even makes a Sensio pod...so that sold me. The machine has the option of one or two cups, and you just put the pod in and toss it after...no cleaning.

I think this is what I am asking for!
