        Simplicity

We bought a Simplicity Symmetry vacuum last spring and have been very happy with it. It cost around $300 and included a separate box with tons of attachments, including a 12-foot hose for the stairs. It's nicely designed and really easy to use, although a bit heavy. It's also American made, which is a plus.

I second the vote for Simplicity-- I had 3 $100 vacuums that all made me crazy until I splurged on mine, and it was soo worth it. 3 kids, lots of visitor kids, and a very "crummy" DH have me vacuuming daily under the table, and after having it for several years it still has the same power, I've never had to fix anything, and it has a HEPA so I'm not breathing the crud while I clean.

I love my Dyson but it's the first or second generation and it's survived everything including a brief period of time when Petey wanted to kill it and I'd come home to find it knocked over with teethmarks all over it.

I just got this Kenmore Canister, and I LOVE it. It is great for wood floors and area rugs and carpets. I vastly prefer it to the upright I previously had. Good luck!

After a bunch of crappy vacuums, and cursing said vacuums, a friend of mine recommended that I look at Miele. It is the best money I have ever spent. I have not had a decrease in suction, or power. I can vary the suction level to vacuum different types of flooring, upholstery or drapes. Even my cheap-o (frugal) husband says I did good. I have owned my Miele for 4 years, and it came with a 7 year warranty and yearly free store servicing (cleaning, checking). At the vacuum store from whence I purchased our Miele, the owner said he had more returns on Dyson and Hoover, and that Dyson vacs take the longest to repair, because you have to order the parts from the company. The vacuum with the least returns and service repairs was the Miele.

My mom and dad gave me a Sebo for graduation from graduate school (about 7 years ago) and it is my best friend (well, a close second to my husband). I love it. It does wonderful things for carpets and hard wood floors. I have 2 of the furriest most shedding canines ever and it has never been daunted by their fur or anything else. It is a bit heavy and to be honest I have no idea what it cost as it was a gift. But I can't imagine ever owning a different brand!

Oh, ouch, just checked out the prices and despite being worth that much that's probably more than most of us have to spend on a vacuum!

this site is great for reviews. we needed a new vacuum and i am a bit skeptical of reviews on most sites since you don't know who is posting them. anyway got the animal 41 and i splurged on the big green carpet cleaner. never thought I would be so domestic, but with the new kiddo on the way gotta try to keep the house a little cleaner.

The Oreck they sold at Costco not too long ago is MY new love. One cool thing about it is that it goes completely flat, and I was able to vacuum all the way under the bed. That and it's insanely light.

Don't love my Dyson. Sorry! The hose is ridiculously inept. I get better suction on my old Hoover, but it started to not work as well and stink.

FWIW, my Dyson has always been this way. It's the Animal one. All lines and areas have been cleaned. I've had it serviced before. I just don't think it's that good.

Interesting...We also have the Dyson Animal, but I completely love it. My dog's hair torched three other vacuums since I've had her (only 3.5 years) and then I got the Dyson a little over two years ago. No problems with it at all...and it picks up a ton of dog hair weekly!

Still love my Miele. I think it works better than the central vac that came with the new house we are in.
