My Dyson animal bit it about 2 months ago; as I was tired of continually fixing it by replacing various parts, I bought a Miele. Love it. Supposedly this baby will last about 20+ years. I sure hope so!

Out of curiosity, how long did your animal last?

About 6 years. I threw in the towel when there was no suction left. I'm tired of taking it apart and troubleshooting.

We are having the Dyson rollerball animal vs. the Hoover windtunnel contest as we speak.

TBH, the Dyson does better on hardwoods and is easier to get into corners. The Hoover does WAY better on carpet.

We have a TON of fur. The Hoover attachments also do better on the furniture.

The Hoover is nearly unbearably loud though. Neither has a long enough cord.

Bump. New place is ALL tile. My Dyson doesn't work well enough on tile for me. I plan to get several large area rugs. But I'd like to get something that works better on tile.

Then this is not for you, but there's a Dyson on Woot.com today for $200 ($5 shipping). It's normally $367 on amazon.

Our new house is predominantly carpet, so we're hunting for a new vac. Timely bump, Michele.

I'm scared of the 300-400 price tags for the entry level "good" canisters (Miele, Riccar, etc). I think we had gotten the Dyson for $130 during a price mistake at Home Depot or Lowe's.

But I love tile and wood flooring and if they last as long as they say they do, then maybe I can get by with the entry level ones (maybe the Miele Quartz or Olympus)...especially since it seems the upper models add carpet features...? Or am I understanding this all wrong?

If I have time this weekend, I probably will go check out a dealer.

My Dyson must have some scratches or something bc it sounds gritty when I go over tile. It also kicks back debris/Cheerios bits when the roller brush is on. Maybe it was because the carpet was cheap and low pile....I loved it in Shreveport....carpet was plush there.

I have a meile canister I paid about $200 for. I didn't get any fancy attachments since I had & now again only have tile & wood. Works on throw rugs too. I hunted sales. Love mine!

Our next vacuum cleaner will be a Miele (Williams and Sonoma carries them btw). My in-laws have a 20-year old one that is quieter and better than any other that I have seen! I don't understand why they can't make quieter ones here. You can basically make a phone call while you are using a Miele!
