  • Theme-less nursery

I seriously have too much time on my hands because I cannot make any decisions when it comes to the nursery.

Because you really only use the sheets, and the crib skirt out of the crib bedding sets we've opted NOT to do a theme. The only SET things are as follows: Our crib and dresser are a natural wood color, we have a maroon lazy boy, and then there is an entire wall of white built in bookshelves.

My initial thought was to pick out a few cute sheets, and paint the walls either a yellow or green and use yellow and green accessories. Thinking more pastels. I'd also like to do some chocolate colored things and then perhaps add a LITTLE pink or blue when baby comes.

Right now I am registered for a chocolate crib skirt, and chocolate changing pad. I went out yesterday and bought a crap ton of baskets to see which ones I like best to make good use of the four bookshelves that take up the long wall.

(See pic below for various baskets)

I haven't decided which baskets I will keep (and buy more of).

I just realized that many of the sheets I registered for are polka dots also!

    http://www.amazon.com/Flannel-Fitted...=392XYBND0N0XX, these, and these.

Now I am afraid that there is not going to be any cohesiveness in the room. Should I:
    • Do solid colored sheets and the polka dot baskets and perhaps polka dot curtains
    • Keep the polka dot sheets and use the plainer chocolate baskets?
    • Keep the polka dot sheets and just use the more solid colored baskets?
    • Break down and just register for a bedding set?

I thought the baskets would add color to the bookshelves, but now I am just so confused, and I am not so good at this decorating thing.

Any ideas, suggestions? I know I am over thinking this, but I want it to look cute and not too busy/conflicting/thrown together!

I think your theme may have inadvertently turned into polka dots! I like the idea of mixing and matching the baskets, some wicker ones with some colored fabric ones. I would probably keep some of the dark wicker ones to balance with the chocolate skirt and changing pad and the dark rocking chair. I like the wicker baskets with the green polka dots, especially the green and brown polka dots, it looks very "clean" to me. The black and white swirl pattern, though super cute, seems a little random to me if it's the only non-polka dot pattern in the room and the only thing with black in it. Those Peekaboo jungle sheets are so cute!! And would look great with a chocolate bedskirt. I don't think polka dots on the sheets and baskets would be too much so long as not every basket has giant polkadots on it. Curtains are a good question - maybe a very small, subtle polkadot or just a solid color? Or compromise and do a solid curtain with a polkadot valance at the top.

Oh gosh, I'm going to be no help in the basket department. FWIW, we didn't do a theme either. Mostly because I'm not a fan of matchy-matchy but also because I wanted the room to be able to grow with him. However, we did pick out art and chose a paint color and accent fabrics accordingly (we were very happy with our watercolors from this seller: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ashmae?ref=seller_info). That's totally a theme isn't it, ha ha. Anyway, I was really lost until I had something to design around. Do you have art picked out or something else to help guide your decisions? If not, that would probably be where I would start and it may help give your room unity without a theme (if that makes any sense ).

I really need to get a job, I am way over thinking things. But you guys did give me some ideas and I came to a few realizations, like the room needs to be YELLOW, because our master bedroom is already green and brown and I don't want another green and brown room! Bittersweet - I am in contact with an etsy vendor and I think I am going to try and use a print to tie the room together. I like the idea of a unique print!

Of course the baskets I like best (chocolate with green polka dots) are being discontinued. I think for now I am going forget the baskets and focus on yellow walls; yellow/green/chocolate brown bedding; and a custom print(s) for the walls that will match those two. THEN MAYBE in the future, I will go back to looking for chocolate colored baskets, and possibly look into making my own liners to match.

I don't think you need a theme if you don't want one. Generally, my rule of decorating is (1) everything has to be useful or loved, and (2) if you get only things that you love, they will blend well together. Patterns will emerge and you'll find that you have a sense of style. In this case, you clearly like green/brown and you like polka dots.

Also, with a baby's room, your style will evolve as you figure out what is useful and what suits your baby. I've found that my taste has changed even between my two boys. While I favor whimsical and traditional "babish" thems for K1, I seem to like things that are more modern with cleaner lines for K2. I don't know if that reflects their temperments, experience, or just the turn my life took between their births.

You definitely don't have to have a theme. We were just going primary colors because we couldn't afford the Dr Seuss stuff we wanted and then DH's grandmother surprised us with the bedding set. It was still mostly primary colors.

Do what you want, you'll spend the most time in there besides the baby.

We don't have a theme. My parents did buy the complete set of nursery furniture, though (we were only looking into the crib and dresser). Since we live in a rental, I did not paint the walls.
However, we purchased some (now) out-of-stock modern material at IKEA, and my Mom made curtains. There's a modern, framed alphabet print on the wall I bought on clearance at Target, and a DIY picture frame set I purchased at IKEA (we change random photos in and out of it all the time).
I'll try and take a picture or two later today.

I've never had a nursery. My dream nursery is the one on Father of the Bride 2. All my newborns have slept with me for the first couple of months and then moved into either a random room with a crib or a sib. When we had our first we were in a one bedroom apartment so our room was her room. Hold out for the older kids rooms. They're more fun to decorate, the kids like to help select so it's a family project and they don't outgrown them quickly.

We didn't have a nursery for dd, mainly because we moved for fellowship when I was 8 months pregnant. We didn't know that we were having a girl, and knowing gender really guides what your nursery will look like, at least color-wise.

I remember I made dh go to Pottery Barn Kids to buy the letters that spelled out dd's name. Then, I dragged us all to a hardware store to buy pink paint so that I could paint them. And where these letters are now, after 2 more moves, I have no effing clue!

Have fun figuring it all out!!!

Someday I'm going to have that Father of the Bride nursery...maybe by number 4 or 5. Ha!

She's in our room now and when we move I'm going to put up the hand painted letters from my sister and hang the quilt a friend made on the wall...they happened to be the same colors so I'm going with it. And whaddya know, vgirl crocheted N a blanket in those same colors. Sometimes things work out quite nicely

Have fun with it...I'm a little jealous you have a while room to decorate right now!!

Know anyone with a cricut? It's my moms new obsession and a really easy way to make beautiful wall art similar to what you might see on etsy

If it makes you feel any better the "room" only has three walls right now.... it's a loft, and we are hoping to wall it off before the baby is born. Because we want to do all the painting and whatnot at once. But in order to do that we need to get some money from our income tax returns!

D will only sleep my chest for right now. Even the cosleeper is too far away. I like the idea of polka dots a lot and that would work well as baby gets older. They may not use a nursery right away anyway. I was totally jealous of pretty nurseries but she wouldn't be in there even if we had one (at least right now).
