We have a monitored security system. I hate it and really didn't want it, but I conceded after our house was broken into last winter. I've set it off by accident a few times but mostly gotten used to it. The monthly fee isn't bad, but installation took a whole day and was fairly expensive.

The people who broke into our house did so by driving up the alley, coming into our backyard (chain-link fence, simple gate), and kicking down the back door. No one was home.

The guy who fixed our door after the break-in replaced the screws on the latch plates of both doors with longer ones. That makes it harder to kick down the door, because the screws go all the way into the 2x4s, instead of just the door frame. I know that probably doesn't make a ton of sense, but everyone swore it was a big deal. He also recommended Larson SecurePRO doors instead of our cheap storm doors, which we haven't done because they're fairly expensive.

We also now have security bar thing (like this: http://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-26...s=door+stopper) that goes up against the back door when we're going out of town for more than a day or two.

We've been meaning to get a motion sensor light for the back porch. A better fence would probably help too.

I don't like to operate like this. Trust is my default position, y'know? I'm just not the sort of person who worries much about security. But sometimes you don't have a lot of choice, I guess.

That really sucks oceanchild. I'm sorry that happened to you guys. We don't have an alley and you have to break through or scale a locked iron fence to get into the back yard.
I honestly feel safe and feel the threat is hyped but Dh worries. I looked up simply safe and I like that you don't have to have it monitored and its self set up.

I just wanted to clarify that I posted what I did not to try to scare you but to show you the simple vulnerabilities that we had. Hopefully that will show you how few vulnerabilities you have. Then you decide what you can live with. I think most people AREN'T very likely to have their house broken into. I also live in a kind of marginal neighborhood, which I'm sure didn't help.

I'm so frustrated. My parents' house was robbed yesterday. This is the second time in 10 years. The first time, someone walked through an unlocked front door. This time, someone crawled through a doggie door. Their large dog was home at the time, but they locked him out of the master bedroom and took jewelry and cash.
What really frustrates me is that my parents are hemming and hawing about what they should do, but they don't want an alarm system and they don't want to get rid of the doggie door. If you leave a large doggie door open, you're just asking to be robbed again!! I can't force them to do something they don't want, but in legitimately concerned for their safety. (And they are, too, which is why this is especially aggravating.) They live in a very nice neighborhood where they are pretty much the only house without an alarm. It's like they want their home to be secure, but they don't want to do anything that's necessary to secure it. (Thanks for letting me rant!)

How scary!!!! Thank goodness they did not hurt the dog. Why are they against an alarm system? Ours also alerts for fire. Maybe you can "sell it" to them by stating that it is also an alarm for fire...you know to keep the dog safe???
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

Could they at least put signs up and pretend they have an alarm?

They had an alarm system in my childhood house (25 years ago) that was a pain in the ass. I do think they'd get the signs, so at the very least I should be able to sell them on that.
Honestly I thought I was making progress on getting them an alarm, until my mom asked how it would work with a dog door opening/closing during the day. Now we're sort of at a standstill.

We had neighbors who had a doggie door that kind of locked. The dog had some kind of RFID on his collar and, as he approached the door, it unlocked. Otherwise, it was in lock mode. Chances are, if they're anti alarm, they won't use it anyway.

Yes, I thought of this and thought it would be a great solution, but then she started making some excuses about how they couldn't use it because of their 2 cats. (??) I'm sort of giving up at this point. You can't force an adult to do something they don't want to do, and I'm clearly not understanding her reluctance to do something so this doesn't happen again.
