• New sofas, new kids

We put our living room furniture in the big room on our third floor, so I need to buy new stuff. With kids, would you go with leather or with a slip cover type look so that you can wash or replace them?

We've been happy with microfiber, but I have plenty of friends who love leather for easy cleanup.

I have both. The slipcovers - look like slipcovers. They also have been washed a few times and look ready to be replaced. The leather looks new. My parents hate it because they think it's cold and slippery, but I love, love it!

No on slipcovers. Seriously, the only time I've ever seen them look good is in a Pottery Barn showroom or in a house that doesn't use those sofas I would go with a reasonably priced leather. Don't go crazy and run out to RH or EA. We have a leather sofa and love seat from American Signature Furniture. Paid around $2k for both (actually it might have been even less) and bought the 7 year warranty for $100 that covers everything. They either fix it or they will replace. It's perfect because the pieces look great, I don't worry about the kids ruining the furniture (although I'm not really that kinda gal but still) and when the warranty runs out we'll be looking for new furniture anyway.

Leather. We have microfiber and it looks like crap. Any liquid stain leaves a water mark. I actually prefer the upholstered couch in the back room because I can scrub stuff out of it.

Wow, our microfiber doesn't seem to stain or have any watermarks. And my kids aren't easy on furniture. I can wipe it off with a damp rag, fluff the cushions and it looks great again. I'd be irritated too if water left marks!

Ours has watermarks but they come out easily if you are up to having them professionally cleaned once in a while. I did mine for the first time in almost 5 years and they look like new. Not bad for a $400 set.

They're from Ashley Furniture and I've been unhappy with them since the beginning. I guess I could try getting them professionally cleaned? I even tried the alcohol trick and it did nothing.

Yeah, mine were a door buster at one of those types of stores. I was waiting until something catastrophic happened to clean them since paying $150 to clean a $400 sofa upset my frugal nature. The puke fest of Summer '15 did it for me. I'm actually amazed that I went that long without having a major catastrophe. And I was equally amazed that everything except ball point pen came out.

                        MrsK I will try that.

I'd still go leather, though. That's what we will get next, post-residency. My inlaws have a 10 year old set (they have 6 children) that still looks fantastic

Yeah, if my budget was different, I'd probably avoid microfiber. Mine are definitely not quality furniture. But for now and with small kids, they get the job done.

I have a 12 year old leather couch that has been moved at least half a dozen times and still looks great.

No freaking way would I ever get anything else.

Just don't go cheap and get the bonded leather. I spent around $700 for a couch for the new house 3 years ago. It is okay, but the 12 year old couch that cost $900 is more comfy.

I agree with leather. Totally worth the money with kids!
