Nice! Keep up the good work.

I got DH to go through his dress shirts yesterday and clear out what he doesn't wear. He had shirts in there that were 7+ years old, with all kinds of stains and things. Just getting rid of those is already making our (shared) closet look so much nicer.

Awesome! It's definitely time for me to do that. It's that or buy more hangers, but I know there's a lot that doesn't fit well anymore. It's just hard for me to let go of clothes that are still in good condition...

Sell them to a resale shop. Get store credit and reward yourself with one new to you thing that you love.

Kondo is anti-hanger, so I went from having to steal hangers from around the house every time I put away laundry, to having...25 empties (and two of those fabric cube boxes for shirts and pants). And yeah, the whole impetus for this process was the fact that I *have* nice things that are far from worn out, so I don't feel justified getting new things, but I never ever reach for the nice new stuff because it just doesn't really suit me. So in the end, it's just getting in the way of the stuff I do prefer to wear, and/or forcing me to keep wearing stained things or stuff in colors I'm not comfortable with. I am going to take some of the nicest stuff to the consignment shop this week, and I'm serious about Labor Day sales -- Eddie Bauer has nice cotton basic layering t-shirts for $8 and I am stocking up, as well as trying out their jeans.

I let go of a pair of pants two sizes too big that looked like I had a full diaper when I wore them, which fetchingly had a huge bleach stain to boot. Yeah. I also let go of several big chunky outer layers that were totally unworn, and an ankle-length sleeveless stretchy evening-ish dress that I bought when I was 20 and wore about 3 times. But I kept a silk sundress that I bought around the same time because I adore the fabric and it fits again!

I started reading the book this morning and am about half way through. It is a bit more woo-woo than I can really do. But, it was great because we have friends coming for dinner tonight and it prompted me to purge while doing the mad dash to make the house look like it isn't inhabited by squatters.

I'm pretty good about the kids clothing. A friend's daughter is a size smaller than DD, so she gets the out grown stuff as soon as it no longer fits.

I actually keep a box in my closet for stuff to donate. As I come across stuff we no longer need, I stick it in there. When it is full, I load it up to goodwill.

DD and I did her clothes today. She said, "Oh yeah, I love it, I'll wear this," about almost everything, but about one shirt she just sighed happily and said, "Oh, I looove this shirt!" I told her, "THAT is the feeling! That is the spark of joy."

Later she asked to take a break, but went back to work before I noticed. She said, "I took some things back out of the donate pile, because I realized they give me the happy sparkles."

She only donated one paper grocery sack worth, but after sorting and folding, her things fit in less than 2/3 of her dresser and the drawers close properly. Whoo!

LOL, yeah. But I was reading around the internet and it was mentioned that the cultural influence of Shintoism in Japan is the basis for her attributing emotions and things to inanimate objects. Puts it in perspective a little, for me.

I figured there was a cultural element to it.

Just catching up on threads, but this is totally my junking vs saving thread. I'm going to read this book. I still have conflicting feeling. Junking is the path of least resistance for me. Emotionally, I regret junking later.

Ladybug, I love how you use "junking" as a verb. I've gone that direction too. When in doubt, discard! I am naturally a packrat, so without any other strategy in my toolbox, if I want to have less work in keeping things neat, I tend to declutter wildly like a knee-jerk response. This book definitely helped me to feel more intentional about it all.

This last weekend we hit a few hotspots. No one needs as many jars of obscure spices as we had. We found a few that hadn't been opened in the past 7 years (someone gave us a crazy spice collection for our wedding). We've dramatically improved space in the cupboard. Woohoo!

I have to do this in stealth mode, or DH gets weird on me.

Yeah, I'm dreading doing my books because last time I did a purge he went through the bags going, "You're getting rid of THIS?" And today when I spread out my workout clothes to go through, he asked, "What are you DOING?" But I care less and less because the results feel so good.

BonBon, I see you in a Konmari FB group. Are you doing the method, or are you done? Any thoughts? I'm done with clothes now, but my ILs are coming today so I can't move on to books yet.
