DH asked me to take an initial run at his clothes and make recommendations on what to toss. I pulled out all his clothes and then just about got hives from the sheer volume. He easily has 4x as many as me. 2-3x what I had before I purged. Needless to say we will be doing his clothes together tonight.

I hear you. And I know you're feeling pressed for time, to get as much done this break as possible. But just FWIW, it comes up all the time in the KM group, "I love books, so I'm skipping them." And in my opinion that logic is kind of a fallacy. If you love your books, then this should be the funnest part of the process. Taking them off the shelf, admiring them, feeling that buzz of appreciation for what they add to your life, then replacing them in maybe a slightly different order to better show them off? Kind of re-awaken the books to their role as something that adds value to your everyday. And in the process, you'll get to see the books as individuals -- and you might find that although you love the concept of "books" as a whole, that there are some specific books that don't necessarily *need* to be in your house. I totally erred on the side of keeping classic books, in hopes that my kids will have a well-curated collection to choose from as they grow up. But I moved out a bunch of knitting books I didn't really love, and made specific spaces for everything that's left, so that they're easy to reshelve without cramming.
Anyway, it's just a thought. You're doing so great! Keep it up!!Alison

So I gave this book to my mom for Christmas. She really likes it but immediately caught on to the fact that the lady has some OCD issues (she's a therapist) and told me the book can be summed up in the sentence "Just throw all the shit away"
She and my dad were going through his clothes while we were talking. In the background I heard, "I can't tell what feelings these socks have until I try them on"

Konmari can suck it. I did my closet...got rid of 9 bags of clothes. Which was awesome until I realized that somehow my most favorite pair of jeans that has been discontinued made it into one of those bags. So now my once organized closet has been torn apart trying to find said jeans.
That did NOT bring me joy. Going on a shopping binge to try to make me feel better. Kind of defeated the whole process.I'm just trying to make it out alive!

Did DH's clothes last night. Didn't get rid of as much as I would like, but it's a start. I told him to only keep things if he enjoys wearing them and feels good in them. He got a little cranky at me for encouraging him to toss things he was keeping out of a sense of obligation or misplaced nostalgia (ratty t-shirts from college or an ugly t-shirt from his dad's campaign). But he paid attention to my folding lesson and said it made sense for his t-shirt drawers. He still has twice as many clothes as me. Today I have to start tackling the hard stuff, like papers and miscellaneous. Not looking forward to that.Wife of PGY-4 (of 6), cat herder, and mom to a sassy-pants four-nager.

Also, I'm happy that I got DH's buy in to keep up the process with his help in the evenings even after my vacation is over. I explained the categories and we thought we could maybe do 1 category per week in the evenings. So I feel less pressed for time now too. I can look at this week as a jump start, but I don't have to feel like I need to finish or do it all perfectly.Last edited by MsSassyBaskets; 12-30-2015, 08:52 AM.Wife of PGY-4 (of 6), cat herder, and mom to a sassy-pants four-nager.

I also live to throw things away. Love it. I'm brutal. Our house is still cluttered because toddlers but yeah, I'm pretty good about filing, organization, etc.
My closet is in a weird state. I have so many work clothes that I never wear but I'm the same size and it's all classic stuff so I'm loathe to get rid of it until I'm sure I'm not going to transition to a position requiring office wear. I don't think I can afford to replace a wardrobe of work clothes that I've accumulated over 10 years. But it does take up a LOT of space.Married to a Urology Attending! I have purged regularly ever since I confronted my tendency to hoard and pile, back in my 20s. It's always been quite easy to get our house to a point where all the surfaces are clear (except maybe for the kids' playroom!) But KM, for me, is not just about decluttering or purging. It's been a major shift of thinking and relating to my stuff and my home. Your mileage may vary, of course!Alison

I'm jealous of you all that can so easily get rid of things. I want to get rid of all of this stuff, or at least get it well-organized, but I have a hard time making the time to do it and then finding a place to put what I do keep. And some of the "what-if" crops up and I wonder if I really will need or want it at some point. And I wish hubby was helpful at doing some of it. I go through spurts where the stuff all stresses me out, and I'll purge, but then I fall back into old habits again. I need the stuff to not ever get into my house in the first place.Allison - professor; wife to a urology attending; mom to baby girl E (11/13), baby boy C (2/16), and a spoiled cat; knitter and hoarder of yarn; photographer

Then, there are the electronics. Take my second generation kindle. Still works great but DH got me the paperwhite a few years ago. I keep telling myself that I need to sell crap on ebay. I have a friend that posts all kinds of random stuff and is always amazed at the stuff people buy. Realistically, I do not have time to mess with ebay...heck, I do not have time to mess with trying to find someone to sell my crap on ebay. I need my free time to spend on IMSN.Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

We have a local town Facebook group that is awesome. I take pics of stuff and put it on my porch and people COME TO MY HOUSE AND LEAVE CASH UNDER MY MAT FOR MY CRAP!
It takes some time to manage, but not that much. Anything similar where you live medpedspouse?
I've accumulated a couple hundred from the past year of selling stuff...baby clothes, old electronics, etc

Now, if you had asked me that when I first got it, I would not have been able to tell you that I love it. A lot has to do with how I feel in clothes and right now I am feeling enormous ( I know I am not but it feels that way).
