And anew is better than versatile, I think.

Choosing trim color

Umm...crap. This is harder than I thought. The color person at the paint company vetoed Shiitake because it's too pink. She got me samples of the three grays (Useful, Anew, Versatile), and today they got swatched. A) My entire house smells like paint and especially the bedroom. How are we going to sleep when they do the whole room? B) All the colors are blue. Really, really blue. WAH. Hoping they dry down to something more reasonable, because my husband (and the painter) are going to kill me if I have to ask for more swatches.
Bonus though: they left me the WHOLE S-W deck to borrow for the weekend. So many colors!Alison

Well, thanks to the color deck and a day searching the internets for discussions and photos, I think I need Accessible Beige. It's on the same color strip with Balanced Beige and Tony Taupe which really blend in with the trim. Bonus -- it's said to be a near-match to the BM Edgecomb Gray you linked earlier in this thread.I guess I have to ask the painter to do another swatch to be sure though. Boo. Hopefully just the one extra option will be enough. Because honestly, if you cut the red-toned wood out of the photo, the Useful Gray at the top isn't SO bad. I'd been thinking that in the long run I'd be painting all the thrifted furniture including that piece. So that color could potentially grow on me...

Husband is totally unimpressed by my color-picking ability and says that we will have "SAD year-round" if we choose anything near as dark as the three colors on the wall. I still think that my main problem was underestimating how much the primarily-northern light would affect the color and tilt it to cool (I mean, check out this array...basically every.single.warm.light shade is one that we've tried.) So I feel that if I go much, much warmer, the "oppressive" aspect will go away. I'm willing to go lighter as well, but I don't think I agree with DH that we need to go as light as the entry (LRV 68) -- the dark trim will kick that contrast up differently from the white trim. So, I just discovered Canvas Tan, LRV 64, so that meets DH's need for lighter without actually going into the whites. It's a frontrunner for me right now.
As a bonus, a subdued version of this palette could evolve toward what we want in the bedroom. http://www.sherwin-williams.com/home.../global-spice/Last edited by spotty_dog; 01-31-2016, 07:35 PM.Alison

Aaagh. I was starting to get tense and anxious this morning about making a decision. I was going to pop up to Sherwin-Williams and grab the sample pot myself, but DH got to texting with the painter and he ended up getting it and coming out to paint it on. He says he was super skeptical about the original colors, and thinks we got it right this time. DH seems to like it too. And the painter is going to paint the ceiling Alabaster at no extra charge just because DH gives him medical advice all the time. So I'm feeling SO much better and more relaxed! Phew!
I know I like looking at other people's paint swatch photos so I'm going to throw one last one in this thread once the sample dries...Alison

Okay, here was one last set of chips I considered this morning. On the bottom is Useful Gray, just for comparison; then Canvas Tan, Accessible Beige, and Kilim Beige.
And here's Canvas Tan on the wall.
I really like it. It reads fairly "greige" and is warm enough to play with the cherry tones in the wood furniture.
And...sorry for my awkward enthusiasm about this stuff. I know I'm a terrible decorator and that I talk about a lot of things for a long time before doing anything. But...I don't think I'm entirely alone in feeling clumsy about it all, so hopefully somebody else is buoyed by my flailing. And I'm actually starting to have some "clicks" as far as understanding how decorating is supposed to work. I'm feeling optimistic at last that there could some day be some actual style in this place...

Really like it. I struggle a ton with picking paint colors. I'll think I have got the right one picked, get a sample and then it looks totally different to me on the wall. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has a hard time. Keep up the good work.
