• House Paint Colors

So, it’s time to paint the exterior of my house. The neighbors on either side of us and across the street have all painted their houses various shades of grey with white trim in the last year. One with a grey garage the same color as their house, one with a darker grey garage door, and one with a navy garage door. So, I’m thinking that I can’t go with grey, right?

What can I do that won’t clash in a sea of grey and won’t clash or look dated? Our house has a grey polywood deck with black iron rails (that probably need replacement. The roof is varied shades of terracotta and slate. I like houses that have high contrast trim and doors. I’m worried that white paint with black trim will get dirty too fast though. Thoughts?

This is the color we inherited from the seller. The front door is orchid. (Yuck)

I love a while house, but I understand the concern about it looking dirty. What about a deep blue with white trim? Does your HOA have any restrictions?

I think I'd be wary of the stark black/white farmhouse look. I think it is going to date quickly on anything but a true farmhouse in a few years.

I like the deep blue idea. What about something like this? We have it in our kitchen and I love it so much I think I'm going to do it in the dining room of the new house. It reads blue but has a strong gray undertone

I had been thinking of blue with white trim and white garage doors too....maybe with a red door? I wouldn’t want it to read too coastal though. I’m worried that a dark blue/navy may fade quickly but I do love it.
SoonerTexan, I like that color but it looks grey to me.

This is only letting me post one picture at a time. So, excuse the multiple posts. I was thinking something like this maybe? I’m worried our reddish roof will clash with blue.

It reads a little more blue in person

I like the Van Deusen Blue--I actually considered that one too. The Stillwater blue is pretty too. Not sure I'd do light blue/green on a stucco. It might read pastel 80s

How about something like this? With a red door. Too dark?

The reddish roof makes me think of sage. I think the stone accents will also have to be considered as you find a color match. I don't think you want a clear/bright tone like that first minty green or that last baby blue. Very gently dulled shades I think play better on such a massive canvas as a whole house. And maybe a creamy trim? Something like this: https://www.houzz.com/photos/plattev...hvw-vp~5915169

                      House Paint Colors

How about something like this? Excuse the sloppy coloring. The Behr app has limits.

Would it be weird that my house would them be red, white, and blue?

I think I agree regarding the minty/baby/pastel shades. I’m not crazy about green though. There are a couple sage/hunter houses in our neighborhood and I haven’t liked the way they turned out.

Our HOA has some limitations; I’m not sure what colors they allow but I’ve seen some houses in our neighborhood that are such a dark navy that they look almost black. IDK if they would let me go with a blue that isn’t very grayed down — but I definitely don’t want grey if all the houses surrounding us are grey or slate.

I was having a vocabulary fart, I think the word I was going for was "desaturated". I do like your mock-up and I think the red door and blue siding could work! I like this one as an example of that depth of blue on stucco with gray stone. And I can super imagine it with a brick-ish red door. https://www.houzz.com/photos/suburba...vw-vp~24245668

Edit: something to think about is if you can narrow it down to color family and find some example photos, you could consult with your painter to make a final choice. They often have color consultants on staff, or at least people with good color sense. (You have to see their other work though and know if you like it! The guy who did our exterior has done some weird color combos so I definitely trusted my own judgment on that one, LOL.)

Oh, and in terms of the red white and blue effect, that's another reason to choose desaturated tones. A mostly-gray color that pulls blue because it's on a whole house, will give less of a star spangled banner feel than a brighter blue. It's also a reason, though, to choose a creamy trim instead of a bright white. Primary colors of red blue and yellow are a classic combo for a reason after all.

Yeah, that houzz example is a little darker than I’d want to go. The mock up is definitely not “desaturated”. Would it be weird if my house was red, white, and blue though? And would using a color that isn’t a beige/grey/taupe neutral hurt our curb appeal? I’ve always thought that color was more welcoming but I don’t want to veer tacky.
