  • my gym dilemma

I am not sure if I should join a gym, because while I may have time to work out now, I may or may not become pg in the near future and then what's the point? I *used to* work out regularly, but then I had the twins and life stopped. I walked and what not, but going to the gym was way too much. The we moved, I had Luke, etc., etc. Mr. Separation Anxiety is going to PreK, so theoretically I could get at least 2 workoouts in a week, but if I become PG, I just don't think I'll have the energy to keep going, even for some very light cardio...

So my options are: Join and pay a big joining fee, and then just eat the monthly payments if I do get pg and can't (won't) go until post-pg with my lovely bouncing nursing 'girls'

Or, just go on walks around the neighborhood with Luke, save $ and *wait* for a dramatic answer to my question of if I will or will not have another bambino.

Sigh sigh sigh... Did any of you actually go to a gym while preggers?

I'm curious to know why you think exercising isn't an option if you do get pregnant? I definitely continue to exercise even while pregnant, I just tone my workouts down a little bit (i.e., no high-impact stuff). I don't belong to a gym, but we're lucky that we have a treadmill in our basement and I have several exercise DVDs that I really like.

Anyway, you know yourself better than I, if you don't think you'll get any use out of it then I guess I would wait. You might try borrowing some workout DVDs from the library or Netflix or something and seeing how you like that.

I'm a bad pregnant lady and don't regularly excercise. I do try to walk Molly our regular 2 mile route at least a couple of times/week but it hasn't been happening lately.

A girlfriend of mine recommended a workout video - I can't look up the title when I get home and post it. I need to get off my duff and either Netflix it or buy it myself.

We don't currently belong to a gym but we're going to join one, probably the Y, so that I have a place I can get out of the house when I'm a SAHM.

If you want to join the gym you can cancel the membership due to medical reasons and PG falls under that. All you need is a medical note and they have to release you from your contract. One of the best ways to get a gym membership without paying the fees is buying someone else's membership. I did it through craiglist and saved $300 and then sold it off to a co-worker after I bought an elliptical.

Actually, this is the time when you need to join so that you can strengthen your muscles in preparation for the huge demands placed on the body during pregnancy.

Most people don't recommend that you start strength training for the "clean and jerk" for the Olympics while pregnant but exercise is usually recommended as long as you don't over do it and listen to your body.

Find a gym that has pre and post-natal classes and you'll have activities to do w/ a bambino that'll get you out of the house and moving. I know the MV YMCA has great classes offered.

Thanks- I just know my pregnant self won't exercise. I get totally wiped out by pregnancy... I'll have to look into the "opt out" for medical reasons- DH thought that they'd have that too. I'm just really afraid of how sore I'll be! Yikes!

              Re: my gym dilemma

We joined a gym in July. My husband started going right away (and loves it), but we were able to put a "hold" on my membership until the spring (I didn't have to formally give a reason). My husband said his old gym used to offer the same thing. If your gym offers that, you could join, start going until you get run over by the first-trimester steamroller, then put it on hold until you know you'll be back up for it.

It doesn't hurt to go in and explain your dilemma and see what they can offer you.

(And hell no I don't go to the gym when pregnant. The walk to the gym leaves me winded--I don't need to pay to go inside! Actually I might have gotten my money's worth second trimester, but first and third no way.)

                  Re: my gym dilemma

So we joined up. DH joined too and he's gone 4 times already. I've only gone 1 time. But it's better than nothing!

Tomorrow I'm going to be soooo sore. It's been... I think about 5 years since I really lifted weights. I didn't do too much- I tried to keep it light, but I know I'm going to be in serious pain tomorrow...

We decided to shelf the whole pregnancy debate for a while. I'm nervous about 2nd year residency-- so my goal is to go to the gym from about 3 to 5 times a week. Luke has preschool on 2 days a week, so I'm "guaranteed" 1 day a week-- the other preK day I usually have to volunteer with the twins class or go to a moms group... That means I have to take Luke to childcare at the gym 1-2 times a week. Hope he likes it! Now that we're paying good money, I have to go... Plus, I have to go... I want my clothes to fit properly...

But I'm scared to wake up tomorrow! I can feel the lactic acid building up in me now....

Drink more water than you think you can stand to flush that lactic acid out!

Yes, I'm around.... I am sore, but not that bad. I drink a lot of water normally, so I'm just going to keep it up!!! Mostly my shins hurt from the treadmill...

(And I only ran for 7 minutes!!! The rest was walking!)

                            I'm so pathetic!!!
