  • Eat This! Not That!

I do NOT buy diet books, but I was intrigued by this one.

    http://www.amazon.com/Eat-This-Not-That ... 011&sr=8-1

It arrived today, and I am BLOWN AWAY by the calories and fat that hide in foods with "healthy" names. 2 "Mulitgrain" pancakes w/syurp at Bob Evans (no meat - just the pancakes) 856 calories, 19 g fat, 1,646 mg sodium.

Auntie Anne's Whole Wheat Pretzel (w/o butter or cheese sauce) 450 calories, 9.5 g fat, 1,610 mg sodium.

Even when you TRY to make good selections - you get slammed. The Panera Sierra Turkey sandwich has 840 calories and 40 grams of fat!

It even tells you which bad thing is less bad ... and the difference can be INSANE! The Au Bon Pain Cinnamon Roll has 463 calories and 20 grams of fat LESS than the Cinnabon Classic.

    Check it out.

Crazy making isn't it. The supersizing of America is rampant. The average pasta portion in a restaurant is nearly a pound. At home that would feed at least 4-6 people. And then we wonder why we are overweight.

We gave up eating at the Chili's/Bennagans/Macaroni Grill/Outback Steakhouse type places a long time ago because the food generally sucks and the meals could feed an Army.

I'd rather pay a lot more for better food in smaller quantities at the local restaurants.

Even when you try to be good, it's hard because of the reasons Jenn listed.

Even the soups are typically loaded with fat and unrecognizable ingredients in those places.

If I'm going to splurge, It's going to be worth it, dammit. Not on some soup the teenager at Chili's dumped into the pot at 5am.

We don't eat in chains unless really pressed and we've both went down a size when I started cooking more. I can't believe the author of the book lives practically in my backyard. If anyone would like their book autographed, let me know.
