  • Need a swift kick

I vaguely remember asking for one before, I might be wrong.

I seem to have this huge mental block for losing weight. I weigh 35 pounds MORE now than I did after my triplets were born. That's crazy. I know what I have to do...but how?! I've got my gym set up in the basement, I've got an iPod, new running shoes, new TaeBo dvd...

How on earth can I dredge up some motivation and willpower? I feel sloppy and gross.

We can be buds! I've been amazed at how much just posting my mileage on the bike has kept me motiviated.

    You can do it, Chris.

FWIW, I would not / could not do it at home. We do have a recumbant bike here in our very own, very nice basement ... but I pay for a membership to a chi chi "health club" just up the road. What can I say? It's FINALLY working for me.

I know it is!!! I have been in awe of your progress!! I've been thinking of buying a tv/dvd for the treadmill after reading your mileage posts. (doubt I'll be watching Twilight though )

The only convenient gym here is Curves. I've never been inside but I'm pretty sure it doesn't qualify as a "gym".

I've been there...my advice -- log anything! For me it was logging not only food, but when I took the stairs instead of elevator, even those tiny accomplishments count. I finally started feeling motivated when I had written down days of small accomplishments. Remember, it is one step at a time -- and for me, I had to write each of those steps down. Good luck!!

Incorporating workouts into my weight loss plan was HARD and painful. I hated it. The only thing that worked for me was to not over think it. When the time came to workout I wouldn't let my mind wonder to another tasks. I hope this makes sense but, I would purposefully not think about the pain I was about to put my body through as I got into my workout clothes. I'd just get dressed, walk out the door (in your case, down to the basement), and just go at it. If I gave myself even two minutes to think about the other things that "needed" to get done then my workouts would ALWAYS loose out to those other tasks.

I don't know, I hate to exercise. HATE IT. But, I've found that the older I get ... the more I need to do it.

So, the only thing that works for me is to do it first thing in the morning ... before the kids and DH wake up ... before the craziness of the day starts. Otherwise, I lose track of time or I find excuses or it falls by the wayside because I've got 137 more important things to do, etc.

I've always been a morning person, so getting up early to exercise isn't too hard for me. I'm usually up around 5am, I'll run on the treadmill while watching the local morning news ... and then it's done and out of the way! (BTW, what is this "runner's high" that people speak of?? I run 3 miles every day and, when I'm finished I feel ... mostly just glad that it's over! )

My husband and I have become hikers-in-training.
We have two high energy dogs that need exercise daily to just be normal -- and it takes literally at least 90 minutes to "tire out" the youngest one.
I love the feeling of a good run/swim/weight circuit workout, etc. but I hate hate hate the gyms around our area. I used to belong to one, but the cleanliness of such a huge place was often questionable, and I could only be on a cardio machine for 30 minutes at a time (sometimes, people are IN LINE to use one, and they have at least 35 different cardio machines)!

Walking/hiking works for me now - I enjoy the outdoors, I spend quality time with the dogs, and no one is checking out my body.

                You can do it ladies!!

Just got back from joining the gym during my lunch break. I need something new to do since I am burnt out on running. My first (and last) marathon is on Sunday. I'm looking forward to taking the fun dance classes at the gym. I also need to start watching what I eat...no more excuses of eating whatever I want because I'm running so much. Can you believe I didn't lose any weight while training for a marathon? Oops. I clearly need to start counting calories. Yuck!

I hear you! I just got back on my diet today. Pierce is now six months and I've only lost about 15 pounds with 40 to go. One thing that I like to do is look at dresses in my goal size that I plan on wearing to DH's graduation. That helps motivate me. Today I looked at some knee high boots that I want to rock with some skinny jeans. Also as mentioned before, write down everything you eat and your exercise! I have a log that I write all of my food out for the entire week and then put a check by it when I eat. That definitely keeps me motivated.

On the will power issue, I'm not sure...other than to take ownership for feeling "sloppy and gross." You know you deserve to feel better, and that you're really the only person who can change how you feel. Own your weight, resolve to solve your issue, then start--slowly but committedly.

What time do you go to bed at night? I aspire to be a morning person, but I stay up way to late.

My answer is that I have to put it in my daytimer at work. Once it's there, it's scheduled as "private" and "busy" so no one questions it. I try to go at lunch at least three days a week and then have a standing appt. with the trainer at 10am on Saturdays.

I try to jog/walk daily, but I give myself an easy out. I put on my workout clothes but I promise myself that if it feels too horrible I'll turn around. For me, getting out the door is key - once I do that I'll follow through.
