  • Acid-inducing foods

I need your help ladies - I am almost 13 weeks, and my acid reflux is getting worse by the day. I'm trying to change my diet before going on meds, but can't seem to find consistent info online. One website said that most fruits and veggies were ok (except onion, pepper, citrus), while another had a much shorter list of ok foods.

Currently, my list of ok foods (that dont make me noticeably ill) include:
    Ramen noodles
    Rice
    Hummus
    Pretzels
    Mini-wheats
    Popcorn
    Peanut butter
Sushi (shrimp tempura and cucumber/avocado rolls)
    Edemame
    Caesar salad
    Bread

Notice a pattern here??? I'm worried that I'm not going to get enough to eat or enough protien. Chicken is on the No list - the thoughts, sight, or smell of it...blech...

Any help from those who have BTDT??

I've had a lot of heartburn this time around. I've been eating Tums like they are candy and sucking on ice chips. Stay away from coffee and carbonated drinks.

How are you with brown rice and some type of bean? Together it makes a complete protein. Peanut butter and whole-wheat bread, too.

I didn't have awful heartburn, but instead ed so regularly that I put Ol' Faithful to shame. There were zero foods that I didn't yak up. It was awful.

      Hope your heartburn recedes soon.

Peanut butter gave me the worst reflux when I was pregnant. I ended up taking 10 tums a day plus famotidine just to keep it manageable during my pregnancy with Daegan. Thankfully it resolved immediately after birth. Hang in there!

Peanut butter and hummus are both reasonably high in protein, so if that's what you're worried about, and they're both OK digestion-wise, just go heavy on them!

Sorry, don't have any other suggestions.

if hummus is working you could try chickpeas, in an indian dish maybe? Lots of protein there. Sorry you're not feeling well though

J, I wish I had good advice. You sound like me in my first trimester (and nothing helped me, unfortunately). You may just be "super acid-y" for a while, regardless of what you eat/when you eat. I second the Tums. I ate them a LOT. I really do feel for you though because I remember being super miserable to the point that it greatly affected my appetite. What does your doctor say?

When I pregnant with Caleb, I asked my doc if there was a limit to the number of tums I could safely take in a 24 hour period. that's when he put me on a script for zantac (ranitiadine). It helped a lot, because there was NOTHING that didn't make me uncomfortable, including water. I've got no real advice, just commiseration and reassurance that it will resolve immediately after birth.

Ditto to what Kris mentions -- dd won't even drink water when her reflux is making her uncomfortable!

I'd keep eating the stuff that you're ok with and talk to your doctor to see what s/he recommends.

Pepsid was a lifesaver for me. TUMS was never adequate for me. Feel better soon.

Have you tried eating other nuts (I couldn't do PB but ate handfuls of almonds and pistacios) or hard boiled eggs? That was about all the protein I got when I was pg. Hope the feeling passes soon

Tums didn't do squat for me either. I took Pepcid or maybe Zantac...whatever OTC the ob said I could take. It helped LOADS. Sorry you're feeling so crappy.

I also maxed out on Tums pretty early on (I think the package said you could take ten per day? But each one only helped for like half an hour, so that math doesn't add up) and then zantac, taken per instructions, was my best friend for the rest of the pregnancy. A Nobel prize to whoever invented the acid blockers!

You could add quinoa to your list most likely. It's easy to cook and it's a complete protein.

I really appreciate all of the replies! My doctor is OK with giving me something, but wants to do so as a last last resort! I figured that I'd try some dietary changes over the next couple weeks until my next appointment.

I had never heard this before - but after my day yesterday, I think it may have been the sources of my extreme discomfort! I took no Tums yesterday, but rather, had a few Good & Plenty when I started to feel yucky (maybe 4 times during the day). Overall, it was a great day! Fingers crossed!!
