My rice cooker is from a Korean grocery store. My friend's mom got it for me when I got married. There aren't many settings so I'll watch out for drying out.

Make sure to rinse quinoa before you cook it -- it has a bitter outer coating that can make it taste funny. Some brands are pre-rinsed, others aren't. Best to just rinse it to be sure. I've found that when I make it according to the package instructions (re: amount of water -- it usually says 1 cup quinoa to 2 cups water) it's a bit too mushy for me. I usually cut down the water a bit from what the instructions say... 1:1.5 or so. I make tabbouleh with quinoa since I can't eat wheat, and it is one of my favorite "clean" meals.Wife of PGY-4 (of 6), cat herder, and mom to a sassy-pants four-nager.

We eat a lot of quinoa and have for years. The protein is great, and it's not a simple carb, so no spikes in sugar.
DH likes it cooked in chicken or veggie broth, to impart a greater flavor.
2:1 liquid to grain ratio - boil liquid, put in grain, let boil resume, cut heat to low and cover. Usually takes 15 minutes.

Wheat is seemingly in almost everything. Ugh!

OK, I have to be really straight with you about the gluten free thing. Do you think you might actually be intolerant? If so, do NOT test it out on your own. Head straight to an allergist and get a blood test. If you "try out" a gluten free diet and then realize you might have a real intolerance, you will have to eat gluten again before you can get the test, otherwise you can get a false negative. Going gluten-free is harder than it sounds, it's a huge lifestyle change. I really wouldn't recommend it it for anyone who doesn't need to for a medical reason.Wife of PGY-4 (of 6), cat herder, and mom to a sassy-pants four-nager.
