My BFF reacted horribly to pre-natal vitamins too! She was nauseated all the time. She switched to children's gummy vitamins, and hasn't had problems since. Her OB/GYN told her that children's vitamins were just as good as prenatal for her use (she started when she was pregnant with her first).

I'm not on BCP, but I'll share anyway. I just take Calcium (family history of osteoporosis) and B complex when I remember (makes me eat better and feel better). If I start feeling sick or my skin gets crazy, I'll take Vitamin E. I also mix chia seeds into at least one meal a day.

For the two months when we attempted pregnancy, I took Flintstones gummies. Those are the only vitamins I have ever taken. I don't take supplements because I eat a mostly balanced diet. I could probably stand to eat more calcium but that's really about it, and I'm willing to have some extra cheese or a glass of calcium-enriched OJ and be done with it. What am I missing?
I'm taking them because I plan to get knocked up in the not-too-distant future. The general rule is that if you could maybe get pregnant, you should be taking prenatals with folic acid... but I'm sure most of us have good enough diets that we don't need to worry too much. I've also had a medical condition that reduces nutrient absorption for much of my life, so even though my small intestine should be normal now I take supplements to try and avoid all the fun conditions I'm now predisposed to - osteoporosis, anemia, d-deficiency, and even scurvy! (Yay!)

Very interesting! So do children's vitamins have enough folic acid? My last gyn (that I only went to once before we moved) told me I needed to take some with over 800mg (I think it was 800) - which I actually a relatively difficult time finding.

Oh I forgot - I also occasionally take some Boiron supplement for nerve pain of my Morton's neuroma is really acting up. I have no idea what it is, so it's likely terrible that I take it. However, it seems to help. (I usually try to only take it if I know I'm not preggers that month - but I should be better about figuring out what it is).

I have no idea if there is enough folic acid in the children's vitamins, but I would assume there would be a fair amount since that's what was recommended. I thought it was kind of weird too.

My OB told me to take prenatal vitamins as soon as I thought about starting TTC. She said really you should be on them for a few months before getting knocked up so you can build up folic acid levels. Even if you're not planning to, it's more or less the same as taking regular vitamins, with a few extras.

JDAZ - can you find a low iron version? I think the iron is one that causes a lot of problems. Also, the prescription ones I took had docusate in them, which seemed to help things out a bit.

Sorry, I should have just googled. They do - at least the one I just clicked on. The same amount as the prenatals I have (and hate). Thanks for the info!!

Alotofyarn - when did they give you a prescription? Do they wait until you are actually pregnant?

I'll look at the iron content - I know I really should be taking them.

I'd love to know how much of this stuff I already have in my diet. I've yet to see an app that does that. Does anyone know of one?

                  I think it helps.

If you want to really be relaxed, you can look into Kava Kava extract. I don't know if that stuff is still available, but it helped immensely with a pinched nerve in college.

My OB gave me the prescription at my annual when I mentioned we were planning to start TTC that year.
