  • Personal Trainer Meal Plan

DH and I signed up for personal training at our gym today. I talked to my trainer, and we discussed my goals. I told her I was satisfied with my weight, but I was looking to gain strength and endurance in order to do well at the Spartan race in June. This is what I got from her this evening:
GOAL: June deadline.. (why was that again, I forgot to write it down), weight loss/toneWorkout 1x a wk.(with me)
    900 calorie intake daily
6 meals daily, calories each meal. No more than 150 at the last 2meals of the day but others can be varied & interchanged a little if you need more at lunch or something. What time do you get up & go to sleeo?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT (you can mix it up as long as you know calories.) Feel free to explore foods & be knowledgeable on what your eating.

BREAKFAST OPTIONS: egg whites, organic /low sugar/steel cut oatmeal Greek yogurt, whole grain toast/waffle or bagel, apple, peanut butter, avacado, fruit, green tea, skim/soy milk, granola, almonds...
LUNCH/ DINNER OPTIONS: fish, turkey, salad w/lemon juice, rice, broccoli, med.sweet potato, chicken breast, turkey, fish, seafood, tuna, brown rice, blk beans,greens,.....
SNACK OPTIONS: bran, celery, grapes, chick peas, almonds, cherry tomatoes, peanut butter, popcorn, hummus, banana, apple, orange, granola, yogurt, protein bar/whey shake, weight watchers brand cheese stick, kale/bean/protein chips, edamame, dark chocolate (60%cocoa)...
FLUID OPTIONS: water, green tea, skim/soy milk, coffee, whey shakes, protein or nonsugar(natural) smoothies...

Any advice, tips or help you need don't hesitate to text me I am excited for you & our journey together for your change! Make sure to stay focused on your eating 6 times a day. I figured you go to bed around 9 so no need to eat after 7ish. (If you can not do this let me know) will your meals fit with this?. Meanwhile choose Healthy options & keep your body fueled to use energy. Your going to do amazing! Tomorrow do strength training class at the gym. Text me tomorrow & let me know how you do! Have a great evening!

Okay, so I admit I freaked out a little (it was more than a little; I might have cried). I've worked hard to get to my goal weight. I'm still not lean by any standards, but it's a healthy weight, and I am happy with the lifestyle I have at this weight (thinking back to an article Michele shared about lifestyles of different body fat percentages). This scares me so much. I don't think I can sustain a 6-meal per day, 900 calorie diet long term. This just screams at me that I will fail at it. And when I fail, I know how quickly I can put the weight back on. I've worked so hard to get here, and I don't want to mess this up I just want to be competitive in a mud run!

I'm pretty sure part of it is a misunderstanding. I mean, who really goes to a personal trainer and says they don't want to lose weight? But part of me says I need to do this. My body isn't great or anything, and it won't ever be with how I'm eating now. Maybe I should just do her recommendations for as long as I can?

And finally, can we all have a nice giggle at her assumption that I go to bed at 9? That's crazy talk!

It's 11:45pm and I'm still not in bed.... Crazy!
Ask her if all of that is to get you to build muscle. I've never had a trainer and the one time I failed miserably with meal planning. But I don't think I was commuted to it either and stopped caring. I think you'll do great! I'll be rooting for you!!

      900 a day? NFW.
Even if you were targeting weight loss, that is a crash diet number, and I am not impressed.

      Find someone else.

900 calories isn't going to fuel you for a good weight training program. Some of the food suggestions themselves are great, but I wouldn't do such calorie restriction. I'd go to the training to see if you like it (if you do, blow off the diet recs), otherwise, find someone else.

Wtf... 900 calories is way too low for anything, let alone fueling you through a day even spent on the couch. You won't able to do any workouts or get that muscle you're after! I'm all unimpressed by her forgetting to write down your June goal. Sounds like she just copied and pasted a "meal" plan in there. Not cool.

Thank you! I knew I should probably just sleep on it... I was so upset last night, even after DH told me exactly what you guys did. Weight is just such a sensitive subject...

No no no. Your basal metabolic rate is probably almost twice that. And that's if you're not working out. That's a crash diet and will lead to a loss of muscle in the long run making you less healthy.

I'm really not impressed. Not only is her advice nutritionally unsound but ignoring your goals is very unprofessional. I know you're not one for confrontation but honestly I'd write back, "I don't think this program is a good fit for the goals we discussed and I'll be finding someone else". Think about it this way, this is like going to a therapist (honestly good trainers are often part therapist) who tells you that you need to ignore what you want to work on and work on something else that isn't even bothering you. NO.

Agree with what everyone has said. Trainers have very different qualifications and the vast majority are not registered dietitians and should not be providing meal plans. 900 is way way too low for building muscle, or even keeping the muscle you already have.

Way to low! DH and I do a nutrition program through our gym. I am on a 1700 cal/day plan and it's prob to low for me. After I had my fat/lean muscle ratio measured, they said my basal metabolic calorie needs would be around 1300 (I don't remember exactly). That is if I did absolutely nothing all day long, my body would need at least 1300 calories to maintain. I would run away quickly from that dude, very, very quickly.

Yeah my basal metabolic rate is 1200 and I am several inches shorter than you. Also basal rate is if you literally do nothing but sit all day long and breathe.

One more thought... You lost weight and got healthier the "right" way. You know what your body needs to feel good and perform well. I've seen your Stitch Fix photos that show off all your hard work and determination. You also look so, so happy and proud (as you should!). I'd be really hesitant to continue a relationship (even if it's professional) with someone who could potentially take away some of that pride and happiness.

Okay, watch out because I have steam coming out of my ears. That is motherfucking insane, unprofessional, criminal. CRIMINAL. I do not care what your goals are, I do not care whether you are 6'6" or 4'5" THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. *string of curse words*

I am going to be back with some more curse words, and some links, after I shake off some of my PTSD. Seriously LM, girls who flirt with anorexia play around with sub-1000 calorie diets. NO ONE ELSE. "Oh, I'd love to have more than lettuce, but Ana wouldn't let me, tee hee!" It is DANGEROUS to ANYONE and EVERYONE. GRR HULK SMASH MORE CAPITAL LETTERS!!!!!

Okay, thought number one is ditch her skinny ass and don't look back. Do it now, do NOT do personal training with her.

This. Totally agree. Anyone who gets a client who is as successful as you've been on your own should be thrilled knowing that you're committed to success and hard work.

Even if it was a mistake, it clearly put you in a bad place and I'd suggest going with someone else. Plus, even if it was a mistake, she's suggesting something completely unhealthy no matter who it is which makes me think she's unqualified.
