• Accountability Group 2017

I figure the old one might need to be archived...I remember posting in it pregnant with my now 1 year old!

However, I loved the idea and want to hear what you have planned for 2017 and designate a place to share progress and successes.

Here are mine:

Running: I don't have any distance race goals this year--my kids are just a little too young and our schedule is just a little too crazy for me to do them often. That being said, here are my loose goals for 2017
• Get closer to a 30 minutes 5k. Right now it is about 35 minutes. I think 32 minutes is a realistic goal for this year.
• Run 1000 miles in a year. There is an official challenge out there, but I'm going to just track with Strava. This comes out to ~3 miles a day, which is doable with the schedule I trying to be more consistent with in the New Year. (4-6 miles on T/TH, 6-12 mile long run on the weekend)
• I'm mulling a marathon for Spring 2018 to celebrate my 30th birthday. There will be much mulling. So much mulling.

Everything else:
• I lost ~35 lbs in 2016. I'd like to lose 25-35 more this year. I wont know what the end goal looks like until I get closer. I think my goal is a size 8--I'm a solid 12 now. I'm never going to be petite (I'm 5' 7" and have a large frame), so I don't know how realistic anything smaller than that really is for me. I'm learning to appreciate my curves and am more focused on looking fit and strong than a particular size at this point. I want more definition in my upper body, lose the baby inner tube, and work on my ass! I've come to accept that I like food too much and my life is too busy to aspire to "perfect"
• Weigh less than my husband! We've been together 13 years and I think I can do it this year! He will promptly go bike miles and miles if I reach this milestone.
• Do a duathlon with my husband. We did one prior to kids and it was so much fun!
• Encourage my oldest in active habits. I just didn't have that as a child and I wish I did. I'm hoping to get her good enough on a bike to occasionally ride with me while I run. Tentatively, we are going to help her train for a childrens triathlon--she is so excited! @tulipsandsuncreen, your oldest might like it too. It's a 25 yard swim, 1 mile bike on a closed course, and .25 mile run--so don't think I'm a crazy person torturing my child!

For 2017 I'd like to make exercise a regular part of my life again. I used to hit the gym or run daily and it hasn't been like that for years. Whether it's a walk, yoga, gym visit, or something else, I need to get my butt moving.

I'd also like to drink more water. This meme is basically my life, except the angry part:

Signed up for Ironman70.3 Edinburgh on July......Gulp!!

Kid free cycling week in Mallorca in March to get legs going.

Like to lose a few pounds and master 12hr shifts and exercise on same day.

We're all planning on being busy, love it.

I am very close to moving into maintenance for weight and inches, but I still continue to slowly increase weights for weight training.

I'd like to be able to comfortably go into full Camel pose for yoga, and Crow pose. No more modifications.

Conquer the hanging ab platform: the final frontier. 😆

Maybe adult ballet classes? That remains to be seen if I have the time.

Over the summer when I was running, my resting heart rate was averaging 52-53. I basically quit running after my half in August, and it's been creeping up. I have barely even gone for a walk more than once a week since October, and this month my RHR average is 60. Meep. So my goal is to get it back down. Less alcohol, less sodium, and more walking for starters. Then when the weather breaks I'll find a new training program -- and hopefully it will involve the bike.

I'll jump in. My goals this year are to add improvements in the smallest baby steps imaginable. I'm starting with getting more sleep and then I'll add in an 8 min core workout on the weekdays to improve diastasis. As soon as I solidly establish these habits, I'll add more. For now, just those two.

I need to stop eating so much junk and exercise more. I'd like to get my BMI back in the normal range, although ideally I'll be about 5-10lbs under that.

Jumping in here:

Run (jog the whole time) a 5K relay - 1.55 miles - in April, and a 5K in June. No other races on the docket yet. I haven't run since early 2013, so I'm gonna start with a C25K program and use some running friends for support.

Go to the gym 2x/week. Once for weight training, another time for a class. Get past my hang ups about classes at the gym.

Cut back on chocolate and cheese. Increase water intake.

Find and see a PCP. Haven't seen one in nearly 5 years and my weight is creeping back up, and it's creating other problems.

Great ideas all around! As for me, I hit my goal weight last year and stayed there for a little over a month, then promptly added back about 5 lbs. After Christmas, I'm about 8 lbs over my goal weight. I want to get back down to that asap after New Year's.

For fitness goals, DH and I have talked about trying to do the Spartan trifecta (5k, 10k, and half marathon with obstacles). In order to do that, though, I need to heal up. I have an ankle injury from August that still isn't quite 100%, and I hurt my knee on the other leg during the half marathon earlier this month, and it has started acting up after about 3 miles ever since then. I think I probably just need to rest, but I might go in for some x-rays if they don't heal up soon. Opinions? So with trying to avoid impact, I've been focusing on elliptical and weights. I've lost a lot of muscle since I shifted from the obstacle course training in September to the half marathon training in December. I need to get back to building muscle if we're going to do obstacles this year.

I love the idea of a kiddo triathlon SoonerTexan. Would love more info on that.

I'm at my goal weight but I'd like to stay there once I wean at mid year. I always add a few lbs when I wean and I'd like to not do that.

Would like to run a race in 2017 (probably a half). 2016 is the first year in 7? years I haven't run at least a half.

I need to be better about stretching/flexibility too. I'm so accustomed to running and then coming inside and starting up with breakfast, etc that I never take the time for a good stretch or anything and it's not good long term.

Get DH exercising more consistently would also be a goal of mine. Residency sucks for that but I want him to take better care of himself.

So I reached my highest weight ever this year. About at that point (this summer) I started paring down professional commitments. It became clear that my mind is the driving force in decision making, which often isn't consistent with my heart, or the way I feel. Not that I want to be emotionally driven, but so many of the decisions I make are building an ideal career while chipping away at my emotional health. That's what has to change. And it has. The last 4 months I've been the most emotionally healthy in years, maybe ever. That means I've spent many a morning or afternoon on the couch, doing nothing, when I otherwise would have rushed to the gym. The result is on a scale of 1-10, when my stress barometer used to average 6-8 I'm now in the 3-6 range. After a few months I started noticing these changes: I enjoy cooking healthy meals. I'm reading again. I actually want to practice.

Here are some things I've learned

*I shouldn't work out to lose weight. It hasn't worked. Work out for heart health and strength.

*I have never had relationships based on looks. It's a strength that my bonds are based on ideas and mutual respect. Trying to lose weight so people will like me more is one of the stupidest wastes of energy in my life.

*Most of the time I crack open the wine because I'm stressed, or bored.

*losing weight and building a career are important, but right now the most important thing is to learn how to listen to myself.

*I need times when I let life happen to me, not try to control and "make things happen", that goes for weight.

So as much as I still want to lose weight, my current goal for 2017 is to be as sensitive to myself as I am with my students. I'm actually hoping to have less professional commitments this semester so I'll want to start exercising regularly again.

My RHR has risen about 10 points as well. As much as I love taking long walks I'm not sure my body considers it exercise
