  • Osteoarthritis

    I was recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Both of my parents have arthritis and my weight also doesn’t help. I have terrible pain in my feet, hips, and knees that makes walking difficult...or even standing up.

    Anyone else struggle with this? What can I do to make myself more comfortable so I can exercise better? I’m trying to lose weight. I’ve tried tramadol but it does nothing.

    I haven't struggled with this, but have you tried special shoes at all? I know it wont solve the problem, but I can personally attest to the amazing difference the right inserts and shoes can make in foot/leg pain (from running).

      I honestly hadn’t thought of orthotics. Do you think I need a referral to see an orthotics guy?

        DH has custom orthotics and they really, really help. He got his from a podiatrist several years ago. They can be easily moved between shoes. Definitely recommend!

          I honestly think my orthotics totally messed me up. If it’s what you decide to do, my suggestion is to not wear them forever. Just more of a short term crutch. I wore mine for like 8 years.... I think bad plan. (I have so many other issues, so it’s hard to know for sure, but even before my surgery I had decided that the orthotics were probably a bad move... don’t go with a super rigid orthotic if you get them).

          Everything on me hurts right now too - so also... don’t listen to me!

            I only wear mine in my running shoes and they are a generic, relatively low profile design to help with my collapsed arches...I'm not really sure where I would start if I were you :/

                Who diagnosed you with the arthritis? I'm thinking orthopedics or PT could be of assistance? Maybe podiatry, I'm pretty sure we've discussed that before, but since it's all through the feet/hips/knees it sounds like you need more than just a foot guy. Seems like you need a good anti-inflammatory/pain relief, and to protect your cartilage, and to make sure that your movements are not causing any misalignment that causes the problem to get worse?

                Glucosamine supplements, or green-lipped mussel, and Coenzyme Q10, are all the rage in some natural medicine circles. They've even got some studies behind them. Might be worth looking into.

                I'm sorry. I have some kind of arthritis thing going on in my big toe, and intermittent problems with my plantar ligaments, and it's a very frustrating and intimidating thing to hurt just getting out of bed. I'm fortunate that my feet limber up after a few minutes of walking around, and my toe has finally been getting better after two months of bothering me. But it's so demoralizing to try to plan a new exercise regimen but know that any run I take or even just a long walk could leave me hobbling. As it gets worse slowly but surely, I'm scared for the future, but I feel like I have to take it one day at a time! There's such a weird complex relationship with the fact that there's family history. My mom has the same plantar thing, and my dad's family is strongly prone to gout. Makes ones genes feel like a ticking time bomb.

                  Walking. I do better on the treadmill than the hard pavement. I’m trying to walk because walking in general is painful and I’m afraid of losing my mobility.

                    I was thinking a PT consult may also be good, like SD said. Do you have any interest in anything even lower impact than walking, like swimming or yoga? I was wondering if something like those could help restore function so you can get back to walking, too.

                      My internist diagnosed me after a series of x-rays. I could pay to see a podiatrist one time, but PT is out of reach right now. I do think I’d benefit from PT. I’ll look into the supplements you suggested.

                      I’m sorry to hear about the problems you’re having. I know how frustrating and worrisome it can be.

                        I would consider swimming if I wasn’t working so much. Maybe this summer when the kids don’t have after school games and activities that end late I could squeeze something in after dinner.

                          Final suggestion! Have you considered massage for some symptom relief? You have so much on your plate anyway, maybe massage in general would be good stress relief and maybe also help with the pain symptoms. If there's a stress/pain exacerbation happening, maybe it could be interrupted a bit. I think some of the chains (Massage Envy, Hand & Stone) have some monthly subscription deals for $50ish, if you can swing it. If you have a local massage school, could be even cheaper.

                              I have slight osteoarthritis is a couple places. An orthopedic sports med guy for diagnosed me via x-ray. Mobic helped at the time.
