So, I am a crazy person who likes to run up hills. I have spent the last couple of months gradually increasing my distance, and I have just come to the hilly part of my route. And my hip/legs are starting to hurt again. So, my question is, can running hills cause pain? Do hills aggravate anything that is already wrong?

My experience is yes! It's certainly harder to shift a mass uphill so your body is under more strain. Your ankles have to flex more, muscle stretch more etc etc and it all adds to the wear and tear! I'm off to run a hill on Sunday. It's great isn't it?!Using Tapatalk

I live in one super hilly town, much to my chagrin. The running stores will often have a midweek "hill day" as part of their long distance training run plans. I quit doing hill repeats during long training stints because of what you are getting at. I feel like hills/sprints as part of an endurance program CAN build strength and resilience. It also can make worn down muscles and joint vulnerable to injuries. Like anything. YMMV, literally and figuratively. If you are looking to mix it up, I can not recommend a lifting or tabata day that is intense enough to get your heart rate up while building strength. In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.
