  • Running up Hills

So, I am a crazy person who likes to run up hills. I have spent the last couple of months gradually increasing my distance, and I have just come to the hilly part of my route. And my hip/legs are starting to hurt again. So, my question is, can running hills cause pain? Do hills aggravate anything that is already wrong?

My experience is yes! It's certainly harder to shift a mass uphill so your body is under more strain. Your ankles have to flex more, muscle stretch more etc etc and it all adds to the wear and tear! I'm off to run a hill on Sunday. It's great isn't it?!

It is great! I'm glad to have a fellow runner who likes hills!! But, for the time being I'll dial it back to flatter surfaces. That seems the wisest choice. Maybe I'll be able to run hills in the future with some injury free time under my belt.

I live in one super hilly town, much to my chagrin. The running stores will often have a midweek "hill day" as part of their long distance training run plans. I quit doing hill repeats during long training stints because of what you are getting at. I feel like hills/sprints as part of an endurance program CAN build strength and resilience. It also can make worn down muscles and joint vulnerable to injuries. Like anything. YMMV, literally and figuratively. If you are looking to mix it up, I can not recommend a lifting or tabata day that is intense enough to get your heart rate up while building strength.

I am starting to see more articles about just what you're saying.......strength work, weights, etc being vital. It seems particularly so as we age. Still live the hills though.....

Wow, that's like a Peloton background! I might be inspired to run hills there too! That's awesome!

Getting dark early now. Beautiful sunsets are the reward for s sneaky hill.
