• ouch Laurie!

I weighed myself today and didn't gain any over our trip. I feel luckly. I wasn't going food wild however it seemed like everything was tons of calories. Were we were had hills and some climbing. I was able to see in action the fruits of all the exercise over the last 9 months. My legs and stamina are really strong. I was happily surprised as I haven't had to test it in the past. Really awesome. I'm currently on a sick break from exercise. I'm hoping in a day or two I'll be well enough to get back to exercising again.

• We fly out to a conference tomorrow, but I will squeeze in a workout in the a.m., and do back-to-back ones on Fri/Sat morning.
18 pounds left to my second goal -- I'm watching simple carbs (which I was eating too many of, I think) and excited to start weigh training one to two days a week in October.

• I've been sick since Sunday, so my exercise has really fallen off a cliff. I went on a walk today so at least I met my step goal. Hoping I'll feel well enough in the morning to get back in the gym.

• Paleo day 4! Feeling incredible. I've run twice this week per my agreement with husband. Ashtanga yoga today. Here's breakfast!

• What's in there?!

(I'm one to talk, my favorite breakfast these days is plain uncooked rolled oats in unsweetened soymilk, topped with a slight sprinkle of dates, some fruit, and a spoonful of ground flax. It horrifies my husband!)

I was meaning to ask, which version of Paleo are you doing? I'm so glad you're feeling great. How do you like running so far? Are you following a program or just getting out there?

That breakfast sounds great!! What's so horrifying?

I'm not doing a running plan. Been there done that. Running outside, setting alarm for 15 minutes, run/walk turn around at the alarm.

What are you wanting to know about paleo? I'm not doing dairy. Eventually I'll try going into ketosis but sticking to

• He's weirded out by the fact I don't cook the oats I think. Hey, they're steamed to par-cook during the rolling process, and they soften up just fine in a few minutes, and just a 1/4 c. of oats keeps me going until lunchtime.

So you're doing fruits and nuts? I think some versions don't allow those, or strictly limit fruit servings. I was just curious.

• Ah that's not too weird! Yea a lot of paleos are ketogenic... Peanuts and soy aren't allowed but most others are fine. Foods like chia seeds are debatable, depends on who you ask.

Cool. How about nightshade veggies like tomatoes and eggplant? I've heard those are sometimes on the no list.

Ohhh... I think those are fine. My understanding is no processed foods, legumes are bad (still don't understand why but OK) peanuts emit some toxin, and soy is too convenient to be acceptable....

Finished dinner, 855 calories. Totally stuffed. You bet I'm having a glass of wine (OK in moderation)

S_D, are you thinking about doing paleo? You know so much about it!

• Starting to get over being sick. Exercised tonight. Since I've been out of practice my legs were trembling near the end.

Naw, I've looked into it from the standpoint of just being generally interested in nutrition, plus I've considered moving to protein-focused diet to support strength training (though that was before I ditched the gym for good!) I also have friends with autoimmune diseases who swear by their improved health on Paleo of varying forms. But at the moment I'm doing ridiculously well by swinging the exact opposite direction (minimal meat, lots of grains and legumes) so for now I'm afraid I'm not a bit tempted.

Oh! So. Today DH and I went for a hike, which only bothered my foot a little. I was considering an afternoon run, but I ended up not having time and not being confident my foot would handle it. But I still am going to end up over 20k steps for the day!

• Hey, MAPPLEBUM, ever since you mentioned Paleo I've been dreaming of this recipe and thought I'd share. Back when I was on the preschool board, our president was a Crossfitter so she'd bring her own Paleo dinners. She often brought a dish of spaghetti squash, cooked and then sauteed with garlic and butter and sausage. A little red pepper flakes if you're inclined to the spicy. I think she used sliced Polish sausage but I've made it with Italian sausage and it's terrific too. Kale fits right in if you want some greens in there. It smelled SO GOOD sitting in those meetings -- I think it was the garlic -- and as far as I'm concerned it tastes like heaven. (I googled around to find base recipes to riff off of but basically you can cook the squash how you like, microwaved or roasted, whole or halved first, and then get the squash innerds and sauté them up with all the goodness.)
