Just so you don't get scared at the meeting Angie - you actually basically have to guarantee that you'll raise that much. When my cousin did it (in LA) they had to make that guarantee w/their credit card (not charged unless they don't meet the fundraising goal). That said, w/o a large circle of friends or big social life, she did meet her goal w/little problem. If you think about contacts at the hospital, school, neighborhood, etc. - it's pretty feasible. I'm more worried about the actual feat of doing it (again - WALKING a 1/2 marathon is where I'm headed).

Others who have done it - please correct me if I'm wrong about the fundraising.

Nope, that's about right- Arthritis was 1800 and Avon was more, but I don't remember how much more.

I sent an email to everyone on my address list, and letters (snail mail) to the older crowds. I asked them to forward on to whomever they would like. I ended up covering a portion of each of mine but it was on credit and I paid it off with the resultant tax returns.

Don't forget that if you do sign-up, post your info here- there are ways to build your own website and then people can donate directly to you online. and we have 600+ members.

I was going to sign up for the 2001 TinT in Cleveland for the Cleveland marathon in May, went to the meeting and a week later found out I was pregnant so the idea was nixed. The procedure worked like Jenn mentioned and people came up with creative ways to raise money. It was neat.

I think that's why they call themselves TNT.

There's also one in Shaker Heights in February, which would be the one I'd consider. However, I'm pretty sure that it's a better option for me to just give a little dough and train on my own. So...sign me up first on your donation sheet!

Okay, I have the materials sitting in front of me. Whew. The financial goals are as intimidating as the physical! I checked off the AK half marathon walk figuring that I can change before the recommitment date on anything.

I was told that the majority of those that do this start out without having ever run more than a couple of miles.

Ugh! I finally brought this up to dh and he reminded me that he will - again - be taking boards at the end of June (the Anchorage one is June 17th). Not a good time for me to be heading out of town. :thud:

Is there an emoticon for banging your head against the same wall over and over and over?

I think that is the perfect time to leave town!! But I guess you mean having someone to watch the kiddos.

                        TNT

I'm in the process of training for a triathlon with TNT. I also have a background in fundraising for corporations and nonprofits. There are pretty creative ways to do it and TNT provides some wonderful suggestions. If any of you feel stuck, PM me and I'll be happy to share what's worked for me in the past. Money is a sensitive subject, and asking for it can be a tough hurdle to get past, psychologically, but do remember to cast a WIDE net. I've found that in order to soften the blow of asking for wampum, I also ask for well-wishes in whataver form people are comfortable providing them.

Best wishes to anybody taking on the endeavor!!!

Okay - TNT required that we raise $4800 for the Anchorage marathon. I would love to do it -- but am really not secure I could raise that much between now and late March (when I'd have to either give in, or put the rest on my credit card).

I WILL find something along these lines to do, though ...

I'm with you Jenn....the March deadline is too early. I'd be aiming for something in the Fall. I'm still evaluating. It's a *huge* financial goal for me. I'm a notorious tightwad. Sadly, the money freaks me out more than the physical event!
