  • What wine pairs well with lasagna?

I'm having some friends over for dinner tomorrow night (Happy New Year!! ) and I'm making a 4 cheese lasagna with bechamel sauce. I'll be serving a simple green salad on the side. So all you wine aficionados, what wine do I serve? I'm leaning towards a red, like Merlot. But I'm also wine illiterate. Suggestions?

For dessert I was going to make lemon bars and something chocolately. Maybe mousse or a tart...

Ditto to the chianti. I think Ruffino has a couple different chiantis? Maybe I am thinking of something else. That label is a good bet.

Third to the the Chianti. Stick w/ the $10-15 range and you should be good to go.

Agree with the Chianti, but also have a white on hand for those who really like white. A Pinot Grigio is nice.

Just a quick not on Chiantis, go for the one labeled Chianti Classico, otherwise you might end up with a weird blend. Peppoli is another good Antinori alternative, it should be around $20.

I haven't tried them side by side. I'll do that next week and let you know. Should I get the same label?

My thought w/ the lasagna is that it's a pretty over the top entree and a basic chianti should be A-OK.

I just had a great white from Masi- Masianco which was a Pinot Grigio and Verduzzo blend. It went really well w/ my chicken cordon bleu and pasta that I made for dinner last night. It's totally a made up for the American market wine but it tasted good. (A supervenetian? like a "supertuscan"?)

I'm a Pinot Grigio junkie. If you go with one for a white, I'd recommend the Alois Lageder Dolomiti 2006. We've been buying cases. I like it better than the St. Margerheti that seems so popular (at least around here).

I think even I'd drink red with traditional tomato sauce lasagna - but a bechamel sauce is not tomato rich lasagne. It's heavy - but white. I bet it will be fab. (I'd stick with my white if you offered it with that!)

Jenn, I absolutely love Masi. They have a very basic red that goes for under $10 and it's perfect for a nice pasta dinner at home. They also make awesome red dessert wine.

Vietti is another name to watch for. It's a small family-run winery that produces great wines. They tend to be a bit more expensive than Masi, as the operation is much smaller, but their Moscato d'Asti is to die for and is pretty cheap.
