    Re: milk!

Wow, I'm feeling inspired to try making my own yogurt! Do you sweeten it at all, and if so, with what?

We go through 1.5-2 gallons/week of whole milk (we switched to the fatty kind for the toddler). Can usually get 2 gallons for $5.69 on a double deal thing.

We go through two gallons easily just for the two of us, we're going to have to buy stock when Adele starts drinking it. I believe ours is running around $3.88.

        Re: milk!

        We drink about a gallon/week.

Milk is far more expensive in the US than in Germany (if we're comparing gas between the two countries, why not have a quick look at milk? ). It's under 2 euros for a gallon of it!

When I calculate it, it's about $2.85 for a gallon (with the sh*tty exchange rate). That's less than the $8 for a gallon of gas there!

Yoghurt, cheese and most produce are all cheaper there.

          Re: milk!

Our milk is about 4.29 a gallon for skim (Great Value cheap brand) at Walmart. For name brand or organic, you are talking 6-8 dollars a gallon.

Milk is outrageously expensive here. Our milk consumption varies depending on what I cook or bake. Generally it is between 1-2 gallons a week.

At Sam's Club, I can get milk for about 3.79. A bargain, right?

Dairy is one of the more expensive things in South Carolina. What, no cows?

            Re: milk!

I have tried freezing milk before, and wouldn't recommend it. Sometimes the gallon cracks and you don't know it until you have a milk mess in your refridgerator. And it never tastes the same.

I'd be all over the 10 gallons for $10 deal. I wish. We're at 3.50 at Safeway if you buy 2 gallons, and Costco was $3.40 or so. We buy 2% mostly, sometimes 1% for cereal. DH won't drink less than 2%.

We drink about 6 gallons a week, I think. And that is only b/c I limit the kids to only having milk at breakfast and dinner-- not for snacks and not for lunch.

One thing that has been really confusing to me since moving to the US is why groceries are more expensive than in Europe yet eating out is far, far cheaper?!?

I drink at least a gallon of soy milk each week. DH drinks only a small amount of regular milk in coffee each day, so that even buying the small packs it always goes bad.

you can make your own ... I do and the boys LOVE it.

We only go through about 1.5 to 2 gallons a week. It's really the boys that consume it. I can't stand cereal ... I've been buying the 3 packs of organic 1/2 gallons at Costco for $7.
I LOVE that stuff. Do you have directions on how to make at home?

We go through 3 or 4 gallons a week, and it will be more this summer when the boys and I are home at lunch. We drink skim, and DH (who does our weekly grocery run at Wal-Mart and just got back) says it ranges from $2.50 (what he paid this evening) to $3.50. It isn't anything special.....probably the cheapest skim milk on the shelf, if I know DH.

My mom used to freeze milk when it would be on sale, and we always thought it tasted funny after it had thawed.

                        Re: milk!

None of us drink milk, and the two older kids just use it for cereal. We will see if Cecilia will break with tradition and be a mil drinker, but for now she drinks the human variety. I buy a half gallon a week.

                          Re: milk!

Milk here is about $4/gal for store-brand skim and $7-8/gal for organic. We go through about 3 gallons a week. In the four years that we've lived here, I don't think I have ever seen special deals on milk.

                            Re: milk!

We drink about a half gallon of skim a week (I use it in my coffee and on cereal. Hubby uses on cereal). We use about a half gallon of whole for the dude but buy the organic ultra pasturized in case he gets in one of his funks. My husband only will use half and half in his coffee so we buy a half gallon every other week or so.

Prices wise- easily over 3 bucks PER HALF GALLON. About 7 bucks per gallon.

and I'm so going to make that yogurt! I love the greek plain yogurt with a teaspoon of honey stirred in.
