After watching Bobby Flay attempt to beat the Pad Thai queen, I was motivated to cook some pad thai today. I sent DH out to our local asian market and made some really good Pad Thai with Shrimp...not the healthiest dinner but was still really tasty. We combined recipes from our Thai cookbook and Cooks Illustrated. Yummy!

Just an update to my previous post about Luke cooking.....I was in and out of the house while he was browning the meat and combining it with the sauce. I had added some chopped onions and minced garlic to the meat at one point as I ran through the kitchen. I was running the younger two boys back and forth to swimming, and we ate when everyone got home. I thought the sauce was *really* good, but figured it was because I didn't have to make it. Yesterday, Luke told me that after he combined the meat and Ragu, he did some tasting (with a separate spoon, he was quick to point out) and decided to add some Italian seasoning and onion powder. Crack me up! I think it had more to do with his fascination with the spice drawer than any budding culinary tendencies, but the sauce really was good!

            YEA Luke!

When I met DH he couldn't do much more than boil water. I've sworn that I won't let DS out of the house until he can cook at least one decent meal from scratch and do laundry. Basic skills my MIl seemed to have neglected teaching DH.

We're still enthralled by our new grill and use it every chance we get (since it's been pouring for weeks, it hasn't been that often). Today I grilled some soft shell crabs, potatoes and made a salad. The crabs were yummy. Got to do it again sometime.

Ooh, we just got a grill too. We had bison burgers last night, but those crabs sound awesome.

Danielle! I hope you had a great celebration.

Last night we had a potato and pulled pork hash with a poached egg. Probably Mediterranean chop salad tonight but I need to run to the store. I made chocolate chip cookies yesterday and now I remember why I don't make cookies that often. I eat all of them. I had two dinners.

I'm just starting to cook again. . . . I have to start dinner around 4. I'm a mess by 6 and DrK eats alone. This week, I've managed a garlic chicken stir fry, an eggplant/ricotta bake, and a roasted chicken. I was going to attempt turkey tacos tonight. Still, we are moving in 3 weeks and I've got to use up all the stuff in the freezer. DrK really needs to learn to cook.

                        Hijack.

Thank you. The kids and I are starving at 5 o'clock and so we eat sans husband. By the late afternoon, I start getting the shakes and start raiding the pantry, typically for junk. I *hate* that Sean isn't around for dinner, but I'm not eating dinner twice. We do try to sit with him and occasionally have dessert or a drink while he is eating.

I suck at the common courtesy of holding dinner, like even when he is home by 6 or 6:30. I'm not thrilled about this trait, but I always have a baseline hunger that needs to be fed or I'll start in on the junk food. I guess I am choosing healthy eating over the family dinner?

Actually, I used to have dinner with DrK. Most of the time, he calls when he's about an hour away from coming home so I can start dinner then. (Or he'll call if he is going to be really late so I can eat without him.) But my morning sickness seems to be worst in the early evenings. Regardless of when I eat, I'm either sick or exhausted by the time he gets home so having dinner with him is not an option. If I can get dinner started before 4, he has hope of eating/reheating something when he gets home. Otherwise, he's having Quiznos for dinner.

Once there are kids, I'll probably have to set a dinner time just so their routine is not disrupted. I like schedules and I think consistency is important for kids -- especially when DrK's routine is so inconsistent. And I think it is important to have dinner with the kids so I'd want to eat with them even if DrK cannot. Dessert later with Daddy is a good idea.

Our house rule is if he's here when we eat, he eats with us. We wait for no man.

I'm exactly the same way, except that I have to have a snack at 4pm before I leave work. Dude gets a snack at school.

I usually have a plan for what we're going to eat and plan our afternoon accordingly.

Lots of prep- start cooking immediately, not so much prep- go play in the pool for a bit.

Same here. Dinner goes forward at 6:00 with or without DH. If he doesn’t make it in time, his share is put in the fridge and I move on. It hasn’t been a big deal and I do sit with him while he eats. Of course my mom thinks this akin to cruel and unusual punishment. Whatever, I don’t think simultaneous chewing is the important part of a family dinner.

I've said it here often, and I'll say it again: Dinner in our house is at 6:00pm, whether you're here or not!
