  • The sheet at the bottom of a chicken package

What is it?!? I had no success googling it.

The thing drives me bonkers. I had frozen a package of chicken breasts, the kind in a styrofoam tray that is then wrapped in plastic. Today I needed it for a slow cooker recipe that called for frozen chicken breasts and the damn sheet on the bottom of the chicken wouldn't pull off completely. I had to fight with it and even use a paring knife to get some leftover bits. Then I decided that I could still see fibers on the chicken and I put it in the microwave to defrost a bit, hoping I'd be able to remove it after that. Nope, it was all gone. Absorbed by the chicken? What is that thing anyway?

One time I tossed chicken in the slow cooker, sheet and all. I didn't even know that thing existed. I found it when I was putting the leftovers away.

The little sheet is there to absorb the, um, juices in the package.

Do you mean what it's made out of? If it's toxic or not?
I think it's just an absorbent sheet, especially for when the chicken isn't frozen.

Yeah, that's my problem. It doesn't come off in one piece. And I KNOW there were little itty bitty fibers at the bottom of the frozen chicken block. Those have magically disappeared after microwaving. Gross. I guess I'll have to make sure to remove that sheet before freezing next time, but I don't even remember if I bought the chicken fresh or frozen.

I'm an idiot, I always assumed that was a cool pack to keep it cool between shop and home.....learn something new every day. Oh and I totally agree, it is super annoying and yucky

Agreed- great thread title! This is one of the reasons why I never put meat in freezer. I usually forget it's in there, and when I don't the thawing process rarely goes well, messing with the texture and flavor.

Here is an embarassing story: I was making steaks one night last week for company and didn't realize that one of those buggers stuck to the back of one of the steaks. I couldn't figure out what the flaky, plasticky stuff was sticking to the meat and pan. I only realized it later while cleaning up. It didn't affect the taste. LOL

Kris, at least you're with it enough to be hosting people for dinner!

And yes, indeed. Any question one could possibly have, you can come to this site for an answer. I hate that sheet too. I never remember how heinous that sheet is BEFORE I freeze something.

My anecdote relating to the sheet at the bottom of the chicken package has to do with my DD getting it out of the trash as a toddler and licking it. That was my second call to poison control THAT week. :eyeroll:

Clearly the product of poor parenting. Mwahaha!

I'm assuming spraying her tongue/mouth with anti-bacterial kitchen cleaner wouldn't be a good idea. How do parents survive parenting?

This thread is convincing me to do as much meat shopping as possible at the farmers market.
