  • Dutch Oven?

Who uses one and what do you use it for? My aunt wants to give me one, but I'm not familiar with them and wonder if I'd use it if I use a crockpot regularly. Please enlighten me!

I've had this same question recently! It seems to be a staple on wedding registries... but honestly no clue what I would do with it!

In case you missed it - this question was answered in the recent pots/pans (see post #45) thread here: http://www.medicalspouse.com/forums/...ght=dutch+oven

Here was my response (I love my Dutch Ovens):

      - Bread loaves
      - Stews
      - Thanksgiving dressing
      - one-pot dishes (stove to oven)
      - Braises
      - Tagine dishes

ETA: - Fast and dirty chicken/beef/vegetable pot pie (with a biscuit bread crust)

Check out the Cooks Illustrated "No knead bread" recipe using a Dutch Oven. If you are going to use a Dutch Oven for bread though, make sure you swap out the plastic handles for stainless steel ones. Apparently, the Dutch Oven allows the bread to maintain the moisture evenly, which is nearly impossible for most home ovens to do (without a professional steam injected oven), but a Dutch Oven creates that moist environment. Very yummy bread!!

Yay, I'm not the only one who thought of someone covering you with blankets after they fart in bed.

                Yes, I'm apparently a 12 y/o...

I'll have to look for that. I use mine (le cruset) as a huge pot.

LMAO. I've never heard of that terminology, nor had anyone do that to me! I have however had a husband fart in the car and then lock the windows. Lord help me. He is so mature. I guess that would be a moving dutch oven.

                      Don't lift the covers?

For food, I'd say an L.C. - totally worth the $. We use it all the time.
