  • A Thousand Splendid Suns

This is Khaled Hosseini's follow-up to his first book, The Kite Runner. Has anyone else read it? I thought it was fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. At least as good as - if not better than - The Kite Runner. The story covers three decades of anti-Soviet jihad, civil war and Taliban tyranny through the lives of two women. If you liked The Kite Runner, you'll love this book.

As an aside: I just read an interview with the author in Entertainment Weekly, apparently he's trained as a doctor (internist). He seems to have such a gift for writing, I was so surprised to read that he has a medical background. He's been on sabbatical from medicine since 2004, and hasn't decided yet if he's going to return.

My mom let me borrow her copy of Khaled Hosseini's latest work and I can't put this book down. Not only is it fantastically well written and a great story, it is a quick and easy read. If you want to be moved and/or think about life differently, this is a good start.

ETA--I finished this book last night. It was so beautiful and I agree that it is even better than Hosseini's amazing first novel. If you want to be moved and think about life differently, pick up this book.

          Re: A Thousand Splendid Suns

I just finished both books. I read A Thousand Splendid Suns first, then The Kite Runner. I actually liked The Kite Runner more. Actually... maybe it's not that I liked it more, but I found it more poignant. I want to read it again, slower this time. I really like how my edition has a study guide at the end of it. Reminds me of HS! But I have not been motivated to actually re-read a book and really think it through in a long, long time.

I think that the reason I found The Kite Runner more intense is bc the entire book is dedicated to the development of one character, whereas in A Thousand Splendid Suns we see lives of the two women separately, then jointly. So it's almost like 3 stories.

Anyway I really enjoyed both books and I love Hosseini's style. It reminds me a lot of Isabel Allende actually.

I read both of these books with my book club. We all enjoyed both of them. With Suns, I was so impressed at how well a male author wrote his two female characters. It also made me appreciate the life I elad as a woman in this country.

I wonder what he'll write next!
